Hello everyone, and thank you in advance for your advice.

I am a career changer planning on applying to the range of Bay Area schools (SFSU is my first choice locally), but I've recently heard from a friend that it's very important to attend a 'top' school. Tuition cost is a key consideration for me, so I was wondering if:
1) prestigious programs are really that much more important and worth the money?
2) I will most likely be going on to pursue a PhD in the Health Sciences, NOT medical school, so would top tier schools even be appropriate for that? Especially as I am using this as an opportunity to explore the different fields and find out what I am most interested in.

Any advice in general on post bacs for people planning on doing a PhD, not an MD, would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

None of this is appropriate for PhD really. These programs are all designed for pre-med, pre-dent, or even pre-vet to a degree. Not pre-PhD.

You should contact the schools and ask but I think you are barking up the wrong tree

Thanks for your reply. I have contacted SFSU, and they just said their program was designed for pre-health students, and suggested that I check to make sure they fulfilled the requirements of the PhD programs I was interested in.

I could see how this would be more of an issue with intensive programs that provide comprehensive advising and prep focused on getting you admitted, as opposed to more relaxed programs where you really just take the classes.
