Hi guys,

So I'm currently in the U.S., going to be a senior this September and I just recently decided to go for medicine. I'm very interested in conducting biomedical research, so ideally I would like to get into an MSTP (MD/PhD) program, but a regular MD program is great too. The thing is, I'm only doing research in my senior year, and I don't think 1 year of research experience is enough to get me into med school, so I need to find a post-bac program that allows me to continue to do research (not just to run errands and wash test tubes, but actually work on a research project). I'm an international student, and most of the post-bac programs I've found so far are for U.S. citizens only. Can someone give me some help or advice, or is anyone here in the same boat as me?

Thank you very much in advance!

A post bac that offers research? That's what traditional graduate study is.

But think longer term. MSTP is funded by the NIH and only accepts permanent residents & citizens. Generally you're not going to do well with US MD or MD/PhD admissions without permanent residency or citizenship. If nobody told you this yet, that's unfortunate.

What you should probably do is look at a multi-year objective after graduating that takes care of a few things: move towards your green card, get research experience, get work experience. This isn't a forum that can help you much with all that. But certainly don't entertain a plan that has you applying to a US med school until after you have your green card.

Best of luck to you.
