how many of you here have or are planning to apply to a post-bac at the same time as applying to dental school, that way just in case you dont get accepted to dental, you arent wasting your time?

where can i find out more about post-bac programs/schools? i live in SoCal.. thanks

I was planning on doing something similar, however you have to keep in mind that many of these programs have application deadlines that are quickly approaching. SFSU has a dental post bacc but the deadline for applying was April 1st.

If you're not already accepted into a program you could think about going the informal route and just taking graduate level science classes to improve your GPA.

thanks for the reply.. i havent applied to any post-bac programs. really didnt think much about them till yesterday.. im still applying to dental schools in june, but i want to apply to a post-bac or a 1 yr masters as well just in case..

does it have to be a dental post-bac like the one at SFSU you mentioned, or are there general postbacs as well..?

thanks!

Are you doing it to better your GPA or just to do something productive while you are applying? I suppose it could be a little of both. If you GPA is already good you can def do a post-bac. If its not, you can always just take classes to boost your GPA and show improvement.

Hope that helps. I am sure there are a bunch of programs that have deadlines after April 1st, but you have to be flexible with location and stuff I'm sure. Also, you would have to do a 1 year program incase you are accepted... it would be a waste of time and $ to just drop out.....

🙂 good luck!

I've always thought it depends a lot on your performance in undergrad because I believe more dental experience will usually trump being enrolled in a masters degree program.

If you had a high GPA and good grades in your science classes, I would say do your best to get a job somewhere in the dental field and just work through the next cycle while applying. If you didn't do so well, go for the post-bac.

im doing it to bump my GPA

im currently a senior, I am graduating this June with probably a 2.9 cumulative..bio sci gpa being a tad under that

i am applying to dental school regardless, havent taken DATs yet since I want to study as much as i can, and Ill probably take it sometime in July, hope thats not too late

as far as working, i have enough experience under my belt, 3 years at dental office, 2 years at research lab, some volunteering/job shadowing here and there..no community service though

so basically, the plan is to apply to dental and a post bac.. since i know my gpa isnt so hot my chances arent the greatest..ill start the postbac, and if i somehow do get into dental, ill just drop out of the postbac, its not a big deal...
