Hey all,

I graduated FSU last spring, with a 3.67 GPA in Finance. Ever since I have been riding a desk, spending my days trying not to go insane lol 😱

I have a somewhat unique background: graduated flight school, surfed competitively in Central America, avid yoga practitioner certified in the 300 hour instructor program, and have had the opportunity to be able to travel to just over 20 countries.

Medicine has interested me for the longest time, ever since I shattered 3 ribs surfing. The 3.5 year rehab/healing period exposed me to not only many doctors, but many specialties as well.
Regrettably besides being a patient, I only have a few measly hours of shadowing experience.

Should I take the next few months to shadow/volunteer as much as possible and apply next year, or should I give it a shot and apply this year, although I am lacking in the shadowing/volunteering arena?

Thanks for the help!
N.Y.😎

Hmm I personally take the approach of "what do you have to lose?"

If you think that you can paint a clear picture and adequately tell your story with the experiences you have, why not try? Others will probably tell you to hunker down for a year and apply next cycle but if you can afford the application fees and know without a shadow of a doubt that this is the path for you, why not try?

Just my two cents though. Best of luck.

Obviously the big question is whether you can handle the work load. I would test the waters before plunging in since once you start this long-winded pathway, any moment of hesitation will look bad. I would buckle down and start volunteering/shadowing and apply early for the 2013 Fall semester post-bacc in January to get into a competitive program. Also by then you should be able to have gotten at least some sense in your direction and clue to how to handle the upcoming years.
