My question is how community college GPA's are looked at during the admission process. I recieved a mechanical engineering degree from a major university with a GPA of 3.45. I have a great job that I need to keep because of current financial responsibilities. But, I believe I am at the point to take the plunge and go for my dream of being a medical doctor. The only college around here that offers classes in the evening is a great community college. They have a pre-med program that will get all of the science pre-req classes out of the way. I am just afraid that after putting so much effort and achieving high grades, that the grades will not count as much to the admission boards.

Do you know of anybody who got into Med-school with doing there pre-reqs at a community college? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

hey, you're a mech eng major? that means you've probably already taken things like calculus, physics, and probably gen chem. you might only need a few prereq classes like orgo and bio to fulfill the premed requirements and if thats the case, don't worry at all about going to a community college. the vast majority of the schools will just want to see that you have the necessary credits in the prereqs. they also want to see that you did well no matter where you went. doing well in those classes is the most important thing. they will note that you went to a good undergrad and obtained a degree in a difficult engineering major, so that works in your favor too. so go for it. then its just a matter of having some good ec's, like shadowing, volunteering, or research, doing well on the mcat, and you're there. good luck.

Call your state school and settle the matter. There are so many conflicting viewpoints on this. Your gpa is good, and any good grades that come out of community college will be in keeping with your academic prowess thus far.

Check out examkrackers.com forum with Judy Levine. There are some posts about cc's on some months.

Also, the MCAT is the great equalizer, so you will be doing yourself a favor if you keep a study guide with you to reinforce the material.

Good luck! And 👍 to you for sparing your wallet!
