I graduated from Stanford last year with a 3.1gpa in physics and a minor in biology. I took the aug 03 mcat and scored a 11v/10b/10p - S. I have done 4 years of research in physics and biology off and on, though I have no publications. I have shadowed, volunteered, etc.

I had several interviews last year, all late in the cycle, and I was not accepted (waitlisted, rejected).

I am post baccing in August, and I feel that I can move my gpa up by .2overall and .25 in the sciences.

I want to go to medical school this applicatoin cycle. Will medical schools see that I'm doing a post-bacc and give me a chance (especially post January when they get my new grades)? 1 medical school I really don't want to go to (and so I aks them all my dumb questions) said they would most likely not accept me this applicatoin cycle b/c by the time I'm a proven academic candidate, their class will most likely be full.

<sigh>

this sucks

with that high of an mcat, u should have applied earlier! don't you know that medical schools are on a rolling basis!

Crystal Meth,

Your stats sound pretty solid even though your GPA is a little low (but hey, it's a physics degree from Stanford😱--that's awesome). Anway, can you apply this cycle right NOW?--when does your post bacc end (1yr or 2yr)?

Did you apply to a wide range of schools last year? All in all, it sounds like your application has a lot of strong points and if you applied early enough to enough schools this year, I am pretty sure you would be accepted somewhere (you never know, right?).

Best of luck,

drumming 😀

My father died when I was young and my mother has worked odd jobs etc. I also applied as a disadvantaged applicant. Yes, I went to Stanford, but that does not change the fact that we grew up very poor.

Any ideas of what to do?

The post-bacc program is simply a large state school second degree program, I can stop after a semester if I want. I'd like to make my bio minor turn into a major and learn some CS.

Are there any more opinions out there?

I think it all depends on what you want when.
Is there a specific reason why you absolutely have to go to a med school starting next August? If not, why not got to a formal postbacc program where you are almost guaranteed to go to a med school after 1 year? Yes it may cost money that you don't want to pay, but that's just another option.

Honestly, with your stats and previous application cycle records (some interviews, right?), you may get in somewhere anyways without you having to have to wait for more grades later on this year. Application process itself is somewhat random, so I'd say that you should just sit tight and apply again. If you don't get in, go to a postbacc (which is what I'm doing because I defenitely wanna go to school next year) the following year and kick ass.

Good luck!!

By the way, if you had lots of interviews last year, you should definitely consider improving your interview skills rather than going to a postbacc!!
