My fiance is currently in her intern year right now in her PhD program. All her externships have revolved around telepsych, mobile app for therapy, and other cool technological innovation sort of stuff. She's published papers in the area too and has pretty good work experiences at really good VA programs. And now for her internship she's pioneering an entire technology wing with new grant funding the medical group recently received. Super proud of all the cool stuff she's done.

Does anyone know of any good post-doc programs that might be a good fit for her? She has an unconventional profile, and I just want to make sure for post-doc (and for full time) that she has visibility to the opportunities that might be a unique fit for her. She's struggling looking for places that are a fit right now on the official channels. Any help would be super, super appreciated.

Just a caring partner over here trying to look out for my girl 🙂 help a dude out y'all!

Check out the telehealth clinic at Texas A&M.

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH <3 Super super appreciate any leads. Really means a lot 🙂 anything else?

Is she looking for a clinical or research focused position?

MCW has that app development for awake craniotomies. @WisNeuro knows more about that.

There’s a large telepsych company based out of Georgia that might be worth contacting.

There is an Australian firm with some private equity money that’s been trying to get that stuff going for a decade .

They do, but it's a purely neuropsych postdoc. Also, Sabsevitz moved down to the Mayo clinic in FL if I remember correctly. Not sure if the app is his property or MCW's.

Peter Tuerk at MUSC does a lot with telehealth. I also believe that Leslie Morland does a lot of work with telehealth. She's affiliated with both the VA San Diego Center of Excellence for Stress and Mental Health and the UCSD/SDA joint doctoral program.

Another option may be the National Center for PTSD with the VA. They are always developing apps and innovative approaches.

Edit: Google tells me that Peter Tuerk is now at University of Virginia

This actually isn't that unconventional a path at this point. Digital health is hot and very mainstream. David Mohr (Feinberg) and Rick Brown (Austin) are the first two that come to mind for me, but I think the days of "digital health" being a small enough field that any experience is sufficient are loonnng past. It is very much its own field with many subfields so it gets quite a bit more nuanced now. Depends on her desired area of focus, desired research/clinical split, as well as her actual experiences/skillset. Someone on a research path who took some outside elective courses in engineering during graduate school to learn advanced computer vision techniques is going to want very different things from someone on a clinical path who primarily wants to do telepsych for their career and did a pilot RCT for their dissertation.

If she is super-research-y (and especially stats-y), feel free to PM me more detailed credentials and I can see if she would fit with our group. I'm not heavily involved in the mhealth line of work, but work with several who are and we might be taking someone next year.

I also just remembered that Peter Shore at the Portland (OR) VA does a lot of work with telehealth. Not sure if there's a post doc there that would work with him, but he'd be a good resource to ask about opportunities.

Couldn't agree more. It's increasingly difficult to find a large academic health center that DOESN'T have someone working in this area. And whereas we often think of treatment delivery when we think of telehealth, a lot of investigators are focusing on primary and secondary prevention through mHealth/eHealth. There is still plenty of opportunity but the field has matured to a point that you need to have clear career goals and probably a specialty focus to make the most out of a postdoc.

And even within treatment delivery, it runs the gambit from "I do CBT over Skype" to "I wrote an app to make your smartphone know when you are depressed before you do."

Man...that second one sounds like fun.

Want a post-doc? That one is mine (albeit extremely early stage - basically validating algorithms for one particular transdiagnostic symptom...and not yet in a phone since the phone tech isn't quite strong enough for my liking).

Just kidding. Its a NARSAD. I can't afford a post-doc. Want to come volunteer?

PS - It involves whales (seriously). How about now? PM for details😉

Don't tempt me like that Ollie! I have one more start-up run in me. I have a couple/few side projects that could really grow, but whales...you had me at whales.

You have me curious. Have you looked into Fitbit or smartwatch based algorithms? Given that the Fitbit can already monitor heart rate, using HRV may help to identify risk of depression depending on how well they can monitor that.

I normally don't worry too much about IP (especially given this is probably not patentable), but am trying to get better. Given we aren't even in data collection yet I am going to send you a PM.
