Out of curiousity, did any of you took time off after undergrad and then took some grad classes before optometry school? If so, what kind of programs/certificates did you enroll in? Thanks!

ummm, any one?

Just took some pre-req class (anatomy, physiology, and microbiology) at community college after I got my BS. No degree/certificates awarded, but the courses are still counted as post-bacc.

I just completed my masters in public health. I graduated from undergrad in 2008 and immediately started a 2-year graduate program. I'm starting optometry school in the fall.

I am starting optometry school this fall but graduated undergrad in 2007. I took sometime off and worked, then in 2008 I retook some classes (Organic and Statistics) at another university I had made a C in previously. This semester I'm in a non-degree graduate Physiology program taking Phd level courses.
The admissions counselors at salus and SCO recommended I take graduate courses to help my application after I wasen't accepted in 2008. I recommend it to anyone trying to get into optometry school as well. Your competing with everyone else, remember that.

If u don't mind me asking, which school did u enroll in to take PHD level courses? Also, did u complete a masters program in order to do that? I am having a hard time finding grad level classes w/o enrolling in a program. TIA!

Not at all. I go to NCSU in North Carolina right now but I went to undergrad at UNCW. However, both NCSU and UNCW offered graduate programs you can enroll in (without having to take the GRE) as a non-degree student. UNCW offered Biology as non-degree and NCSU offers Physiology. If you just want to take the classes w/o persuing a degree you may be able to contact the departments your interested in directly and ask If you can just enroll in just a couple classes. You will probably have to contact the registrar too. They let me add the classes on the web just like regular classes, they just wanted to make sure I had taken the necessary pre-requisite coursework. It wouldn't hurt as well to enroll in a masters/PHD level program as well, just in case you need a back up plan (it never hurts).
And, no I did not complete a masters program, I just have my undergrad degree. GL to you, keep searching and you'll find something!
