Has anyone heard anything post-interview communicated to them? Specifically at MetroHealth/Cleveland, Vanderbilt, OSU, U of Mich, or St. Vincent's?

Haven't heard any feedback from anyone. Actually scratch that.

I usually email the PDs and thank them, and if I liked the program, I'll tell them at the end. None have written me back except for the PD at Allegheny. I think he was just writing me back though because we grew up in the same area and are Redskins fans.

Other than that, nada.

*sigh* I want something in the mail! Or atleast email.

I had 2-3 people reply to an e-mail or say something like that, but they were nice, but didn't say anything positive on my end or intriguing. I got one letter in the mail from a very high program for me. But, I'm still trying to figure out if this was a polite letter, or a letter to all who rotated, etc.

Not that a letter guaranttes anything. Actually, it's the fact that it's in their best interest to kiss our asses that makes it scary when you don't hear anything good, or they have a poker face at interviews, etc.

No one else has heard anything from any of the programs in Ohio?

I did hear from one program in Akron.

Anyone hear from CWRU, Carolinas, Palmetto, or Indy?
 
Both Akron programs sent letters. I haven't heard from anywhere else in Ohio, but I've heard of letters going out from Metro.
 
How many people did you hear about getting metro letters?

I received post interview communication from Cincinnati and Akron City(SUMMA) but nothing from Case/Metrohealth or Michigan.
 
I have gotten a reply from Metro. They sent a letter saying Hi thanks...Your a good canidate.....Please keep us in consideration.
I have not heard back from Akron General though!?
 
So far,

I've gotten a letter from MetroHealth, a letter from Summa, an email from St. Vincent's. I've gotten pretty blatant "feedback," at two other programs during the interview. Other emails or comments I'm not "counting," as they were sent in reply to a thank you email, etc, were not spontaneous.

What ave you guys heard?

Wright state sent me a survey about their interview day, but nothing specifically to me. Nothing from Toledo or OSU.

I got that survey, too. I had a really good interview day at Wright St, so I took my time in filling out the survey.

So far: Metro letter/email, St. V's email, Summa letter, OSU letter. Not much else. Some places I've interviewed at (as I'm sure you too) came out and said that they don't play this post-interview game (Charity, etc).

Hopefully people will share information and stop being paranoid. OBVIOUSLY, this is not going to change an applicant's or program's ROL.... I'm just doing this out of bored curiosity. Anesthesiology doesn't start until Monday. Haven't touched a patient in three months (last had rads in Nov, then 2 mos of vaca)

Just got a letter from MetroHealth. Sounded pretty generic, only had one line remotely interesting but I think they sent that to everyone... "You'd be a great resident at any residency, incluidng ours." or something along those lines.

I've gotten post-interview feedback at Akron Gen, Allegheny Gen, MetroHealth, and USF.

Yeah, I think we all got the same letter. The thing that's hard to tell is do they actually send that to certain people or just anyone that interviews?

I never got anything from Akron Gen. It was my first interview and I thought it went reasonably well, but I must have done something wrong. I've heard of a few people getting a letter.

I got email from U Maryland and Harvard (Mass Gen/Brigham)

Got letters from U Cincinnati, Vanderbilt, U North Carolina

Don't know if any of the above communications will affect my rank list - but it nice to get good feedback.

3) Jefferson - email
4) U Chicago - letter
5) USC - letter

I hate to say it, but post-interview communication does affect how I will rank certain programs. And I'm sure, even though most PD's deny it, our communication with them may affect how they will rank us if they are considering two similar applicants.

It's funny because I interviewed at Maryland and thought everything went very well. I received my interview invite pre-Dean's letter but ended up not being totally impressed with the program. But I have heard jack from them, so I guess the feeling was mutual. I thought the interviews went alot better. What a waste of driving and hotel expenses.

I heard from Orlando email too, very brief/vague/but a "would love to have you" statement.

I got love letters from Case and OSU last week; and an email from OSU as well.

Mike, could you elaborate on the Charity - we don't play the game thing? Unless it was basically just that...

I asked them point blank and they said that they don't usually send these emails or letters, that your rank is set soon after they interview. They said they don't care if you say "I liked your program somewhat," they would still leave you high, or if you kissed their ass, they wouldn't bump you up, etc. I asked it in relation to "second looks," because I asked the best way to "express interest," since I would not be able to afford one.

I didn't get an e-mail from OSU, I got a short letter saying "based on x,y,z you're an excellent candidate and we'll be considering you highly.." ??? The metro letter was a form letter and I got a return email that was short but seemed very positive.

I sent letters to my top 5 programs and I got a positive response from all but Charity (no response) and the OSU one wasn't really a "response," it was dated well before my letter.

You start going nuts, because you start reading between the lines to see if they're using just normal english or if "highly, very highly," and "excellent, great, outstanding" all mean different things (like on the dean's letter).

So, we'll see.

I was just thinking the same thing about the "dean's letter code words" as I read my surprisingly quick response to an email I'd sent to a PD today. He used the words "very good" and left me wondering if I should rethink my rank list. I guess in the end the only thing to do is go with your heart (or gut) and be glad that there are other people as neurotic as I am to commiserate with until Match Day! Good luck everyone!

What did you hear from Cornell/Columbia? Maybe I am just being a paranoid medical student...but I have emailed the PD, did a second visit etc. He has always emailed me back, but I have not received any unsolicated ones. Do you mind telling me (in general) what your email said (e.g You are an excellent candidate etc) and if it was in response to your email or not. I know that I am probably being obsessive, but hey I am a medical student!!!

Oh, just to add to this tread, I received a generic letter from Denver with a little handwritten note from the PD saying...I enjoyed talking with you about blah, blah, blah.

Yeah, I emailed him first and he simply replied with "you've done all the right things, you're a great applicant...." I really like the program, but since it's new I've having doubts with how to rank them. 😕

Thanks for indulging my paranoia!!! I think that NYP is going to be a great program. The PD is great and everyone seems really into it. I am sure there are going to be bumps along the road especially the first year, but in the end I think it will be a top program (especially academically). The attendings are all pretty young and I think they are recruiting some big names from other places. I am going to take a chance and rank them high, I think it is worth the risk.

I interviewed at University of Michigan. One of the interviewers specifically said something to the effect of, you will not be hearing from us, don't worry, that's not the way we do things.

Hopefully this will reduce some fears.
 
Thought I'd bump this topic, now that the big day is approaching.

I routinely sent a thank-you letter or email. I got email replies from Yale (individual interviewer) and MCG (PD); no response from UCONN (even with a 2nd look) or USouCar. Since then, I have recieved unsolicited f/u from St. Vincent's (2), MMC (2), ECU and Regions. ECU and Regions were very general thank-yous that I believe were sent to everyone, and St. V's and MMC were more specific.

Any updates from anyone?
 
I interviewed at 11 programs sent thank you letters to 9. Got responses from 3. UC Irvine and Stanford were pretty generic. Palmetto Richland was very specific and encouraging. Didn't hear back from Davis, Harbor, OHSU, USC, UF, or Olive View....
 
Last week I received an unsolicited email from the Assoc. PD from Henry Ford. Pretty generic--hope you think we're a good fit, call with any questions. At least they didn't send it out to "distribution."
 
The PD's wife came to my house yesterday, brought her daughter and asked me if there was anything else I wanted. Joking..or am I?

Haven't heard anything else. Sent a bunch of snailmail letters out to the top 5 programs I'm ranking, haven't heard a thing. A bit nerve-racking. I'm going to start calling every 6 hours until I hear an answer, that should work.
 
I sent e-mail to my #1 telling them they were my #1, and got no response. I sent e-mail to my #2 and told them they would be in my top two, and got a thanks from the PD via e-mail and he said he was glad to know of my interest. From my #3, I still occasionally get e-mails from the PD there because I did my month there and performed fairly well, I suppose. Beyond that, I've heard only from one other program, Louisville, who said that as "they completed their rank list, it was clear that you are one of the more competitive candidates for our slots and hope you'll keep us in mind." And that's been it. Frankly, the silence is alarming to me; I figured that as this process came down to the wire, there'd be plenty of program-applicant chatter.
 
agreed. I was expecting a lot more phone calls and letters.

I am glad to hear I'm not the only one who was expecting constant communication. I always heard from my advisors and from students in the class ahead that, "Oh, this isn't like applying to medical school, they're trying to recruit YOU to their residency program," and I got the impression they'd be sending e-mails and calling trying to get applicants to rank them highly to ensure they don't have to go too far down their match lists. Apparently, I got a picture that was inaccurate or just plain wrong. And I'm not a bad applicant, I don't think, and I interviewed at ten programs.

Anybody who has been through this before and matched and might be lurking out there - did you end up matching at a program which you heard absolutely nothing from prior to the match? Or did silence genuinely indicate disinterest?

Case Western (the same letter twice, in fact)


That's it. I interviewed at 13 places, so that comes out to more than 1/3 programs.

None of these places called me personally.

I guess we know now which programs are desperate and hungry for new recruits, because I'm hardly a stellar candidate.
 
I know that Case Western sends a letter to everybody that interviews. It is more an instance of being polite than being hungry for recruits.
 
I interviewed at a ton of places and would consider myself to be a competitive candidate. I received post-interview communications with the following programs (in alpha order):

Cincinnati - letter and phone call
Duke - phone call
Emory - letter
Harvard (MGH/BW)- email and phone call
Hopkins - email
LSU New Orleans - phone call
Northwestern - email
University of Maryland - email
University of North Carolina - letter
University of Indiana - email
Vanderbilt - letter and phone call

While most of these have been in the last 2 weeks, a few were directly after the interview.

Other places I interviewed and didn't receive any post-communication

Cook County Hospital
George Washington University
Harvard (BID)
University of Florida

And --- I have to be honest and say that I didn't complete thank you notes to every program I interviewed with.

That's a pretty nice list FutrEDDoc. Lots of programs with great reps. One question I had was about your communication from Indiana. It seems I remember Carey Chisholm telling me they didn't initiate contact with anyone following interview day. Was your email a response to one you sent, am I mistaken about their policy, or are you just that good that you are an exception for them?

what kind of response did you get from Stanford? Was it a reply? What did they say? Sad.. didn't get any.

I interviewed at, but didn't hear from: Maryland, Vanderbilt, & LSU New Orleans. When did you interview relative to when you were contacted? I didn't expect anything from Vandy---crappy interview. But the other two I thought went reasonably well.

In answer to MikeCRWU's questions:

I interviewed at Vandy earlier in the process. Got a thanks for coming letter soon after interview and then got a phone call a few weeks ago.

Interviewed in Maryland later in the process. Got email a few weeks ago.

Interviewed at Charity in December. Got phone call within last few weeks.

In answer to Desperado's question:

You are right that I didn't receive communication from Dr. Chisolm. I interviewed for the combined program and got an email from the Ped's side of the house.

The nice thing for everyone is that even those of us who receive communication from multiple programs can still only fill ONE residency spot at one location. It is my understanding that most of this post interview communication is aimed at the tops of ROL's for programs. Trying to coerce/convince the candidate to rank them higher because they are liked. But, assuming that top candidates in one program's eyes are similar to top candidates in other program's eyes, there will be plenty of programs who ranked a person high and then didn't end up with them in the program. So even if you didnt hear from someone - that doesnt mean that your chances of getting into any program are dismal.

Only a few more days until ROL's are due. And less than a month until the Match!

WHENEVER YOU READ THIS, CERTIFY your list RIGHT NOW!!

Don't get screwed waiting until Wednesday, and having the system so jammed with every other person waiting until the last minute.

You can still change it, after you have certified it. Just get the primary job done now!
 
Wait, are you saying that we can change our ROL even after we've paid and certified (provided it's before 2/27, of course)?

I just want to make sure, because I'm going to certify my list on Monday a.m. Hopefully there won't be any last-second changes, but you never know.

YES...which is why is best to at least certify a list prior to the heavy traffic preceeding the deadline. You can always change it...Best of luck.
 
For those of you who mentioned receiving post-interview mail from MAINE, could you tell me if it was it

a) a personal letter/email
b) mass emails about upcoming lectures (letting you know you could come by for a second look or to attend conferences)

we received the mass emails, but nothing personal.
