So perhaps you all would like to enlighten me as to what kinds of post-interview correspondence you are expecting? What would influence your decisions? What would make you feel better? What might make you rank my program ahead of a similar program?

Keep in mind that I can't tell you what you really want to know--that is, where you are placed on our ranking list...

Well, you could, and some do.

All I can say is there is psychology in play. If someone gets a seemingly personal and genuine expression of interest from a program, that person may start looking at that program in a more positive light. People act like the match is all about math and logical preferences, but there's a lot of emotions getting pushed around as well, that much I can be sure of.

Ultimately I don't think anything you can say would influence my decision of how to rank places. If I liked the program on interview day then that is that. And intrusive post-interview correspondence such as calling me or sending leading emails about how highly I will be ranked would probably only weird me out. I have appreciated the programs that have explained they don't participate in post-interview correspondence, and not to interpret that as a lack of interest on their part.

That being said, I certainly feel better when I get a quick "Thanks, it was nice to meet you too" reply or something similarly relevant that acknowledges my existence. In the end I will have a base line anxiety until match day no matter what anyone says.

I would like to add that while Sinai has not got back to some of the applicants they interviewed, they have taken the time to reject me... twice.

Well, two negatives make a positive, right?

I thought that for a moment but their negatives were quite assertive in their conclusion, so I think it swung back around to a no. Oh well, next time...

On further thought, if I did hear anything from my number 1 or 2 I would probably swoon and get really excited 😍, but ultimately, they are already by number 1 and 2, so it's not like it gains them anything. But further down the list it may have some influence. If I feel like a program is more interested in me I might be more likely to put them above a similar program that does not seem to care as much. It becomes a rather inexact science at that point, and too much correspondence risks coming across as pushy or contrived- which drops you off the list entirely.

I'd say I'm a bit different. I'm having trouble choosing the order in which to rank my top three. I have a rough idea, but I might just end up sorting them in order of physical distance from home.

A nice email from a PD might affect the order a bit. A "ranked to match" email would probably win me over.

My hunch is it's pre-mature to get those sorts of e-mails at this point. They're still conducting interviews. Late Jan / early Feb is when the slobber-fest starts.

Or maybe I'm wrong.

It is premature, since programs aren't even done interviewing yet.

If you're getting emails from PDs saying that you would be ranked highly, that's a pretty good indication that they're just blowing smoke. Programs aren't close to done interviewing yet.

I know Mayo and I think HSS finish up their interviews next week. But, as another poster already mentioned, the "slobber fest" probably won't start for another 4-5 weeks.

Slobber fest? I hope you aren't all expecting too much, I don't think many people I spoke to in last years group (of which I was a part) got too much of this...

One of the residents at a program I interviewed at told us that in order to get ranked highly you had to send the PD an email saying that they were your number #1. I thought this was fishy... anyone care to comment?

It's crap--because basically it means a PD can't trust a thing that an applicant says post-interview. If we interview 50 people, and 45 tell us "You're my #1" because they think they "have to"--what does that add to our ranking decision? And even if we really wanted those other 5--we'd still rank them anyway, and the match algorithm would still sort them according to their preferences.

As I've said before, a simple, sincere thank you is sufficient.

It is illegal for a program to say this to you as it could get them in big trouble with the ACGME. Why would you even expect to hear something like this? You won't, unless the program is stupid. You have to live with uncertainty. It's unpleasant but it's true. There are people who do not match and they have to reapply the following year. It's not the end of the world, it does happen. Have a plan A, a plan B and a plan C. Life doesn't end if you don't match. I have lived through not matching, even in he scramble, and it wasn't the end of the world. So you live and learn. Im reapplying and interviewing again and what I have learned is you don't know diddly squat until March. Thats just the way it is. Deal with it. Focus on other things. Do something for others. Don't get too caught up in your own mind spin. It won't make the time go any faster. You will have plenty of time to adjust to the idea of where you are going or not going once March is here. Until then, just accept it. You are powerless and at the mercy of the "match gods".

Well you're wrong that it's a match violation for them to tell you where you stand / how much they want you / where they plan to rank you.
