Post-Interview Thank you notes??

I just had my first interview at TUCOM-NV and wanted to send a thank you note. What is normally done....do you just send a note to the dean of admissions, or should you send a note to each of the people who interviewed you? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! 🙂
 
Thanks dr.z....I dont want to look like a freak sending a million thank you notes to everyone I shook hands with 🙂

I sent one general one to each interviewer and one to the admissions office. It is just the thought that counts...

I didn't send any. Is it common for people to send thank you notes?
 
I've been accepted to schools that I've sent some to and some I haven't. I bet it doesn't really matter. Like most things in life go with what feels right. Afterwards there won't be regrets.

Thank you notes are not required. However, if thank you notes are sent, each one will end up in your file come adcom review time. Having sent thank you notes will make you appear, ha, thankful, mature, professional, and committed. I have sent a thank you note to each person who interviewed me and anyone in the admissions committee that spent a significant time making this process go easily and smoothly. I have been accepted to all five schools I interviewed with thus far. I sent a thank you note to AZCOM where I turned down an interview the day before it was scheduled, and they wrote me an e-mail telling me how sweet it was. It is not expected, but it is the icing on the cake. Good luck!
 
I sent short e-mails(1 paragraph or less) thanking the interviewers. The two schools I sent thank-you emails to, I got into. The two that I didn't get into, I didn't send letters to. And no, I don't think e-mailing thank you letters got me into those two schools, but they sure didn't hurt and only took a few minutes.
 
I don't think it is about increasing your chances or anything. It is just to say thank you for them taking time out of their day and the opportunity to check out the school.
 
I was accepted into a school without sending a thank you note. It may depend on the school, but I know a few of them actually prefer people don't send thank you notes.

Sending a note isn't a guarentee admission, nor is not sending a note a guarentee to be rejected. As mentioned above, it is a simple gesture to say thanks for their time and the opportunity to learn more about the school.
 
I attempted to send thank you notes to most of the schools. The majority of the notes ended up coming back to me because of insufficient addresses (I had addressed all of the notes to the offices of admissions figuring that someone in the office could deliver the note to the right person). So, my advice is that if you decide to send individual notes address the envelope to the exact office of the interviewer.

So now I guess we must conduct a thorough survey asking the medical schools what they prefer. This makes me angry. As if we haven't already spent enough money and time, now we have to deduce what they prefer with regards to the thank you notes? Most of them are probably never even read! 😡

Ya, writing a quick note is real time consuming and expensive!

Yes it is time consuming because I put thought into every thing I say, even on this forum. What is the point in having a generic thank-you-note?

And it is expensive because I had to buy nice thank you cards which cost $4.99 + tax at CVS. Then there are $0.37 stamps on each envelope. Put it all together and it is an entire meal to me. I have to watch what I spend since I am living on my own and have to think about food and rent.

If we are lucky, they probably go as far as opening the envelope, skimming the card, and throwing it in our file. I doubt there is even a check off box to say that they received a thank-you-note. What do you think?

I sent out emails to 5 interviewers. Got 2 positive responses. The other 3 didn't respond. Didn't cost a thing.

I considered the email track. But I guess I felt it a bit crass. This was just my personal opinion, so do not make any thing of it. I believe there is still something more personal about a hand written note. Interestingly enough, my hand actually hurt after writing them--I am so used to typing, I suppose. Maybe that is why I am complaining so vehemently.

With regards to getting a swift response, I see how it might have been a good idea. :idea: Then again, these professor's email boxes are probably so flooded, that maybe it would have been a nuisance. I have no idea either way.

I just sent e-mails to my interviewers at one school. They gave me their cards and said to e-mail them if I had any questions so I just e-mailed them a thank you. It took me longer to read this thread and write this comment. And the same amount of money!
 
At some schools, after the interview, you are reviewed by the committee within 2 days, so sending thank you notes in hopes of increasing your chances obviously doesn't help or hinder under these circumstances, so I guess a thank you e-mail would be better. I never even thought of a thank you email 'til I read this thread...Thanks!
 
I'm going to send out a thank you note to AZCOM tomorrow (even though I interviewed 2 weeks ago!) It can't hurt.
At my state MD school, they specifically said to not send thank you notes to your interviewers at the school, because all they do is forward them to your file and then the adcom is not allowed to see them so they just get trashed! So... unless they tell you not to, I think it is a very professional and personal gesture.
