Post-Interview Thank You Notes

Is it more appropriate to send a personalized type-written business letter or a simple, hand-written thank you card? Also, besides sending thank you notes to faculty members and residents who interviewed us, should we also send thank you notes to residents who attended lunches/pre-interview socials? Thanks in advance for any input offered.

i send emails to almost everyone i had major contact with. i feel email, although not as personal, is the most efficient and convenient for all involved. plus it is easier for them to reply.

Please make sure you do not send generic / same email to everyone, as some programs put them together in your file and the PD gets to see them.

i personlize each one. a few of them are extremely lengthy. some may contain similar paragraphs though here and there. is this ok?

PLEEEEEASE stop stressing about this! This is really getting painful to read...

Yes it's nice to hear from an interviewee, especially if there is a "connection". A brief email is fine*.

Yes it's GOOD to send a note or email to the PD to express your interest (assuming you are honestly interested) in the program. And it's OK to write or call again in January if you want to keep your impression "fresh".

But PLEASE don't get the idea that we are going to sit around comparing notes about you between now and our ranking meeting.


*(However, a large envelope of cash, concert tickets, or even a six-pack of a good microbrew, MIGHT ensure I'll remember you more favorably...wink wink nudge nudge 😀 )

I have to admit that I got a few hand-written thank-you's from some applicants for whom I took some time to answer questions and give tours...it was a nice touch, and noticed by the PD in some instances. But, I definately wouldn't say it's necessary or mandatory.

I think a thank-you to a program for which you're genuinely interested is a good idea. They definately do put it in your folder and notice it on consideration day when they're making their rank list. This only makes sense, since someone who expresses thanks and speaks of the strengths of the program and how they would feel good to be there is a slightly stronger application than an equal app that didn't have that.

But OPD is right...stop stressing, you'll all be fine.
