Hi guys,

My background: heavy clinical research background, especially in the field I'm interested in.

My decision: Post-M1 summer, do I do an externship/research program that I apply to (perhaps something at a "prestigious" medical school, or a school I might be interested in applying to)? Or do I stay local and research at my home med school.

Regarding choosing home med school:

I have research projects ongoing at my medical school. I don't think doing any more work on these projects will raise where my name ends up on the projects, and I don't think stopping my work on these projects will results in my name not going on any of the pubs. I will be paid about $3,000 to work on those projects at my school. I will get to make my hours which is awesome (get paid by the hour, work a lot when I want, vacation when I want).

Regarding choosing new place:

A structured program might have teaching elements as part of the program that would be interesting and beneficial. It would allow me to see how another hospital works before rotating, and perhaps make a connection at a place I will apply to later. Unlike at my home school, I would probably get on some new projects and up my # of pubs. I do like to travel and being somewhere new would be great.

Are externships/research programs beneficial on residency apps? Anyone have any opinions or knowledge to help my decision?

Sounds like you've already made up your mind. 😉

The 2nd option bc it increases the number of pubs and you can make connections at another program. Sounds like all you get out of the first option is money.

Thanks for the responses. I'm having trouble figuring out whether these programs actually exist, anyone have a list or any resources for trying to find that?

They certainly do exist. Your school should have a career development center (the office that helps people apply to residency) that also periodically sends out emails about research programs/fellowships for summer, or better yet, lists them on their website. I found out about the fellowship I did over the summer (which was at another school, paid, with teaching elements) through such an office/resource.

Gunning should be a crime.

More pubs > 3k in cash.

Second option without a doubt. In terms of FINDING these opportunities, connections or your school's CDC.
