Not trying to get too ahead of myslef, but does anyone know what is considered proper etiquette after we find out where we match?

I imagine calling your new PD and Chairman that afternoon is recommended, but not sure if that is the norm or even expected. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Hmm...I hope I'm not slurring my speech by Thursday afternoon.
I would like to hear others' opinion on this. I was under the impression that PDs and/or Chairmen often contacted us with a standard 'congrats' message.

Great question - i was wondering the same thing.
also, what about thank you's to those who helped us along the way - advisors, etc - it crossed my mind to take them a small gift of some sort, but don't know if that is kosher. particularly if we match at our home institution and end up working with the same people next year..

Many programs do call you then send you a confirming letter. Often they leave it on your voice-mail since you are out still "celebrating" after the match when the call comes in. I think it is appropriate to return the call and say thank you and express your excitement at matching there. (Fake the excitement if you have to). If they don't call you, I think a call to the office the following week is appropriate to express your interest and to check to see if there is anything that you need to be doing in the interim (to which they will tell you that they are sending you a mound of paperwork 😛 )

As to thank yous to your LOR writers, advisors etc. A think a card will do just fine. If you want to give a token gift I'm sure it won't be turned down, but I wouldn't get to worked up about it. Honestly, I think very few people do anything, so I think even just stopping by each person's office to tell them where you matched and to say thank you will be appreciated.

Congrats to all that matched!

Thanks Surg, very helpful indeed.

But even if the program doesn't call I have to say that before the festivities begin and the frosty beverages are freely flowing I think contacting the program that day is a good call to make. Like with any new job I would want to make a good impression right away by expressing my thanks for the "privilege" to train there for 5-7 years.

I would love to hear other peoples thoughts, both applicants and residents.

My thoughts are most ppl will be well on their way to being hammered WHEN they find out.

4th year here waiting for tomorrow...

Go with your instincts. It's common sense and classy to make the call and express your thanks, etc. Lot's of things in life are not required or necessary, that's not the point.

Good luck tomorrow.

calling sounds like a good idea. especially if you can do it before any alcohol gets into your system.

I really don't think I'm going to call the program. If they call me and I'm in any shape to talk to them that's fine.

Some sort of contact is appreciated, especially updating us on your contact infor (especially if you only have a school email which will expire in May/June), but not necessary today. Go have fun!

Thanks for the tip. besides updating contact information, what else do you recommend?
