There seems to be 3 open positions at LSU/Ochsner...
Is there a specific process to follow in applying for the spots?
Also, anyone know if there is any specific reason why LSU/Ochsner didn't match these spots? just bad luck with the match? or are there major red flags with the program?

Thanks for the help!

I have been calling all morning and no answer. I think they are just about to get a new chair (Jayne Weiss from Kresge). I dunno if this is the program I am thinking about.

How quickly do these positions get filled? I know for the ERAS scramble I was told it usually gets resolved by 5pm the same day of the scramble. Is it the same for sfmatch?

I'm sorry you guys have to deal with this, I am sure it sucks. I don't know anything about the scramble but I am sure that there are folks who read this forum that do...so if anyone does have some insight on the SF Match scramble please impart some wisdom and experience to those that need it.
Slitlamp and Eyes101 I'm sure that if you search through older posts and archives right here on SDN you will find some information on the topic too. Good luck.

I matched, but I did a great deal of homework in case I was put in this position.....

Your home program needs to barrage the open vacancy program with emails and phone calls until they get through to someone and they can make sure your application gets to the right people. Find out if ANYONE you know is connected to any faculty there and have them call/email. They will invite a handful of people to come down to interview almost immediately and literally will make a decision on who will get the spots in just a few days.

Also, according to the LSU/OSCHNER residency website, they require an eye exam with stereo. Have that scanned and emailed to them as soon as possible as well. That could help you a lot, because I bet a bunch of applicants will not send an eye exam ....

Thanks for the eye exam info eye guy. Totally missed it!
I have also been calling all day and no response too..
Dont know too much about the program or the new chair, but sure, 3 spots does seem like a lot. From their website, apparently they were shut down after Katrina and reopened sometime back, and are on the largest programs in the country, but have lots of IMGs in their class. Perhaps from trouble filling I dont know?! I know before Katrina it was a great progam, affilliated with charity hospital...but then got damaged or something.
Good luck to all!

Um quick f/up for eyeguy - musta missed it - but would you please point out where on the website they ask for the exam form? Its late at night, and perhaps Im fast asleep, but was trying to find what else they needed (eg color VA, refraction, DFE, etc)...or just the stereo...

Applications
All applications must be postmarked by October 15, 2007.
In addition to the SF Match application, applicants must submit the results of a recent eye exam and stereo test.

Clearly this date is not right, but they wanted an eye exam back then and probably want it for all applications now that they are up and running. Def will help you to send one and I believe it will definitely make it easier for you to get a shot at interviewing with them etc.

Dont know specific reasons but I know that at Oschner you have to goto like 5 or more different places during residency and I think 2 of them are places where you they set you up in a hotel because its too far from New Orleans. Most people dont like that.

Just out of curiosity, which other programs had vacancies this year?

None...there's rarely ever more than 2 or 3 unmatched spots per year. Since 2005, the most was 2.

Actually, On the sfmatch website, there seems to be a vacancy at Albert Einstein as well (although Im not sure as to the start date).

hope it helps, g'luck

There definitely aren't any blatant red flags to the program. I have a couple of good friends who are in the program currently, and they are all extremely happy with the program. Understandably, alot of people are turned off to the idea of traveling to different sites- you cover most of South Louisiana including the towns of Bogalousa, Houma, Lafayette, New Orleans, and Baton Rouge, but they do provide housing and gas money to travel between the different locations. They are getting a new chairman this year, a Cornea and refractive surgery specialist from Wayne State.

According to my friends, they have never had unfilled spots before, so honestly I think they just had bad luck with the match this year. In addition, they have not had any IMGS within the last two years. I believe they only had 2 or 3 IMGS in the class that applied soon after Hurricane Katrina.

I wish the best of luck to all of you who did not match, and I really think you should consider this program. New Orleans is a great and fun city to spend your residency in, and it is a very clinically strong program from what I hear. Shoot me a private msg if you have any other questions--and if you are considering one of these spots, I would contact Gale Marie Abbass, their secretary, as often as possible as Im sure these spots will fill up quickly.

Best of luck.

Also- when I interviewed there they did not require any eye exa or stereo vision results. But Im sure it couldnt hurt.

Just wanted to see if anyone has heard anything?

Gale emailed my dean's office after they sent some of my stuff over and she said that she'll be showing the admissions committee all the applications and contact everyone to interview on an individual basis by Jan 28th. Good luck!

Has anyone heard anything about potential interview with LSU? Just curious.. if invites have already gone out.

it's ~3:30 on tuesday, and i haven't heard anything yet..

The Interview Committee has concluded its review of nearly 200 applications for our remaining two positions.* They have offered interview invitations to ten people for later this month.*
