I bumped into an US Army recruiter recently, and he informed me about the benefits of joining as an MD, especially because they are severely short on primary care doctors (he did give me the main reason: very long deployment periods, but I don't imagine this to be of an issue with me)

So I was constructing my PS, and was seriously considering the notion of joining the Medical Corps following board certification. Does this sound like something that can be taken negatively if I write it in my PS? Especially if the program is community based? Or programs that state they specifically prep residents for rural practice?

If you're just "considering" the military, I wouldn't include it. I'd hope that you have enough other things to talk about. Talk about how you want to help people, about experiences that caused you to want to do family medicine (I assume you want to do FM since you posted here)...When you get an interview you could decide if you want to talk about the military when they ask you the "Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?" question...

You might get other answers if you post this question in the Military Medicine sub-forum.

By "considering", I mean in an ideal condition where circumstances haven't changed, so definitely if that is the case, then I would consider it seriously, if things go as planned of course.

I've talked about specific situations/reasons that made me go with family, how my personality & goals suit the specialty, but at the end of the PS, I would like to conclude by saying that after being certified, I see myself doing something like this (military etc.) amongst other things.

I'm sure the question that you mentioned (where I see myself in 5-10 years) would come up in the IV, and this would be a good way to start a discussion (by them already having an idea of what I want to pursue) right?
