What do people think of a post-sophomore fellowship vs a more basic sciencey HHMI fellowhsip? I am interested in both.

I did the HHMI fellowship (the one where you can do at any school). I really thought it was a great experience. Of course it depends on the lab and mentor you will choose, but I really, really enjoyed my year. I ended up having 2 first author papers, one second author, another 4th author paper and a few abstracts. I did think about doing post-sophmore fellowship but I was really more interested in doing research for that year. I did get my first choice for residency, but I am not entirely sure I needed the HHMI or psf for that 🙂 although it probably helped. Feel free to ask me more questions.

Also, your research does not have to be very basic science oriented. Mine was more of a translational research and was more clinically oriented.

Thanks. I love research. I have all these publications in J. of Invest Derm, but I am really interested in path. Pathologists are so cool.

pick the hhmi fellowship if you want to do more research and make your application more competitive, although with papers under your belt already it might not be required.

pick the psf if you are having a hard time deciding about doing path and you are not sure what path residency entails (it can be very different from your second year ms path course), although you can get the feel of path as a career during an elective at your school.

can you do the year of research and arrange with the path dept. at your school to spend time with them off and on?

I will check on that. Thanks for the tip. I know at HMS all the attendings in derm, but no one in path. I will see.

From the other thread you started it seems you already have research experience. You likely do not need to take a whole other year during medical school. You can get a feel for path by doing a couple of good rotations where you become really involved in signing out, grossing etc. I'm not sure what the rate is of PSF's going into path after medical school but I'll bet its less than 50%. If you already have papers in derm what will another year really give you? Since you are at Cornell medical school, you have a wealth of programs in the city to check out.
I really don't think PSF is of any major benefit to your future. (Your individual case based on previous thread)
