My gf and I are thinking of taking a semester/year off before going to med school (we're juniors). Perhaps some traveling or working before selling our souls? :] She's taking off a year but I may be graduating a semester later (i.e. fall 2012) due to conflicting class times from both my majors.

What are everybody else's plans?

I am not aware but you might need to provide convincing reason for deferment. If you could, I would def do it. Enjoy. there's no reason to rush through your life.

👍 or 👎 idea? Can you defer med school admission for a year?

My vote: 👍

I'm taking a year off (or more if I don't get in the first go-round...). I need at least a year just to enjoy my twenties. It's all downhill from here, right?

Mostly, I just couldn't stand the idea of going straight through undergrad-->medical school-->residency, etc. I just wanted to pause for a short time and experience some things on my own watch, and without the limits of school and having assignments/tests/classes looming over my head. I don't see any reason to rush, medical school and your (hopeful) career aren't going anywhere, but the opportunity to do what you want, and go where you want when you're young and with a relative lack of responsibilities and baggage only comes around once.

As far as deferring goes, I think you need to have a pretty good reason--"I don't feel like going yet...how about next year?" probably won't cut it. If you have a great and more concrete opportunity like Teach for America, Peace Corps, grant to do research abroad, etc., I think they're much more forgiving. I'm not sure, though. I've obviously never tried it myself...

I think I've already done my post-college plans. I took a year off, went to grad school, got a job while I was taking post-bacc classes.

I'm liking the plans on here - peace corps, schooling, EMT, whatever! :] I want to try a bit of everything. I'd really like to teach English in France. My undergrad school has a program that I'm looking into....

In all honesty, before I found SDN a few months ago, I thought that everyone did the same thing.... graduate from undergrad and go directly to med school. Silly girl!
