So... May 15th is only two weeks away, and I am considering asking for an additional LOR from the MD who oversees my lab. I did not ask her before because when it was time to apply, I had just started my internship in her lab so she did not know me well enough (or at all) to write a letter. This lab is employing me full-time this summer, so I figure now is a good time to ask. I feel like this LOR could give me a boost and help me get off the waitlist. The lab is at a top 10 med school, so I'm hoping that the adcoms will look favorably on this aditonal letter. Is this a good idea, and if so, how should I go about asking? Also, should this letter be less formal than a regular LOR?

I can't hurt to send it in, and it might help. Even better would be having someone with connections to the med school call and speak to the dean on your behalf (if you kbnow such a person). I think the LOR should be in the usual format, as if you get stuck reapplying next season, you'll probably use it then as well. I'd be forthright in discussing your strategy with the MD you've referred to so she will buy into your strategy and submit the letter promptly.
