If you are a PhD/PsyD who has matched at an APPIC Internship site in the past, please post your stats so that prospective applicants can see what it takes!

1.) The year you applied/matched

2.) Your stats:

  • How many face-to-face intervention hours did you have (and if you recall, further break down into individual therapy, group, supervision of other students, etc.)
  • How many assessment hours did you have + how many integrated reports did you write
  • What practicum experiences did you have? (settings/populations)
  • # of publications (and clarify whether first author or not)
  • # of posters/talks/conference presentations, etc.
  • Strategies when applying
  • Anything else you feel was relevant to your candidacy
3.) How many sites you applied to/What types of sites you applied to

4.) How many interviews you were invited to

5.) Did you match? (if so, Phase I or Phase II, at what type of site, and if you're feeling generous, how you ranked that site)

Just looked over my stats and stuff.

Applied for 22-23.

stats:
880 intervention hours (a mix of individual, group, family therapy). 200 assessment hours. I can’t remember number of integrated reports- definitely over 10 though.

Settings: inpatient psych hospital, residential treatment center, school setting. All child/adolescent focused

1 publication (first author), 3 poster presentations.

Started looking at sites the summer before applying and literally looked at every child focused site in a state I was willing to live in. Put those in a google drive. Then slowly started to kick places off my list that weren’t as focused on training areas I was as interested in, unique rotations, etc. Come August I had a pretty good list of places that I felt like were a good fit for my experience as well as were going to train me in areas I wanted. I had a mix of really competitive sites and not as competitive. I applied to 19 and was glad I did- 3 or 4 of my sites dropped out of Match after I applied and if I had only applied to 15 I would have been panicking with only having 11 viable options.

Interviewed at 9 sites (12 slots with different rotations). Matched in phase 1 at my top choice- CMHC in SoCal area. Happy to answer any other questions!

1.) Applied in Fall 2023. Matched in Spring 2024. Started Internship in Summer 2024.

2.)
Your stats:
  • How many face-to-face intervention hours did you have (and if you recall, further break down into individual therapy, group, supervision of other students, etc.) = Too many to count. Way more than what was required. I was already a working mental health professional before beginning my doctoral program. This experience really helped my application a great deal.
  • How many assessment hours did you have + how many integrated reports did you write = Again, too many to count. I had extensive assessment experience before even beginning my doctoral program.
  • What practicum experiences did you have? (settings/populations) = Schools & Children's Hospitals. Child populations from infants & toddlers all the way to young adults.
  • # of publications (and clarify whether first author or not) = I had 0. I don't think this was that important for the places I applied to though. Everything about my work is very clinical focused. I have no focus on research at all.
  • # of posters/talks/conference presentations, etc. = I also had 0.
  • Strategies when applying = I had no strategy whatsoever. In hindsight, I would advise anyone applying to start working on your 3 essays early. I believe that my essays were very weak because I did them at the last minute and did not put enough thought into them. I don't think I was very convincing in saying why I wanted to work at certain places. Also, I would advise you not to restrict yourself too much geographically. This was a mistake I made in phase 1.
3.) Phase 1 = 7 Applications (3 Children's Hospitals, 1 Consortium, 3 Outpatient Treatment Centers).
Phase 2 = 3 Applications (1 Children's Hospital, 1 Consortium, 1 Outpatient Treatment Center).

4.)
Phase 1 = 0 Interviews.
Phase 2 = 1 Interview (Consortium).

5.)
Matched during Phase 2 with Consortium that I ranked #1 (I had no choice but to rank it #1. lol).

Sure, why not? Seems like fun.

1.) The year you applied/matched - Applied in Winter 2022, Matched and started internship in 2023.

2.) Your stats:
  • How many face-to-face intervention hours did you have (and if you recall, further break down into individual therapy, group, supervision of other students, etc.) - I am gonna be atypical here - I had a truly pathetic amount of intervention hours. I know from available research that this is the number one consideration of many TDs. I had just under 130, IIRC. They were mostly individual therapy, with about 25% group.
  • How many assessment hours did you have + how many integrated reports did you write - I am an assessment guy. I had just under 550, with I think 26 integrated reports
  • What practicum experiences did you have? (settings/populations) - Forensic psych positions. I had 1.5 years in civil, 1 year in criminal, and two concurrent preinternships doing E-RP and trauma teletherapy - these last two I just had little hours since they started relatively close to the hours cutoff date.
  • # of publications (and clarify whether first author or not) - I had 5, 3 first authored.
  • # of posters/talks/conference presentations, etc. My PI freaking loved conferences. I believe I had 29, a solid half being paper presentations and symposiums.
  • Strategies when applying - My family limited me geographically, within a region a bit bigger than a tri-state area. I also only applied to a few BOPs because of the mandatory in-person aspect of the interviews (my condolences to pre-COVID folks who flew for literally every interview).
  • Anything else you feel was relevant to your candidacy - Can’t think of any
3.) How many sites you applied to/What types of sites you applied to - Some local AMCs and VAs, but largely forensic state hospital positions.

4.) How many interviews you were invited to - 5 interviews, 10 rejections. Intervention hours were killer

5.) Did you match? (if so, Phase I or Phase II, at what type of site, and if you're feeling generous, how you ranked that site) - I did! Matched to my number 3 in Phase 1, a forensic state hospital. I vibed with them heavily, geographic considerations ranked them lower. I ended up really loving the site and I recommend others apply when I can.

1.) The year you applied/matched: 23/24

2.) Your stats:

  • How many face-to-face intervention hours did you have (and if you recall, further break down into individual therapy, group, supervision of other students, etc.) Around 600 - I believe about 250 were group, maybe 50 were supervising other students, and the rest were individual
  • How many assessment hours did you have + how many integrated reports did you write 150ish hours and 50 integrated reports
  • What practicum experiences did you have? (settings/populations) Outpatient with college students and community members, residential, forensic assessment, and primary care
  • # of publications (and clarify whether first author or not) 0- wish I had prioritized this a bit more
  • # of posters/talks/conference presentations, etc. 2
  • Strategies when applying Didn't limit myself geographically, applied to places that seemed like a good fit for my interests. Made site list and started essays very early (first drafts were done in June). Got feedback from faculty and peers on my list and my essays to ensure I was not aiming too high with my sites and that my essays were in good shape.
  • Anything else you feel was relevant to your candidacy Remember that you are also interviewing the sites. This is a huge training experience for your career - make sure you are asking the questions you need to ask in order to make an informed decision for ranking.
3.) How many sites you applied to/What types of sites you applied to 15 sites, a combination of VAs and university med centers

4.) How many interviews you were invited to
12

5.) Did you match? (if so, Phase I or Phase II, at what type of site, and if you're feeling generous, how you ranked that site)
Matched in Phase I with a site that I was very excited about ( not my top, but it was high up there)

Fun to reminisce now that it's over!

1.) The year you applied/matched: 22/23

2.) Your stats:
  • How many face-to-face intervention hours did you have (and if you recall, further break down into individual therapy, group, supervision of other students, etc.): The rough estimate was about 550 intervention, maybe 100 was group (COVID got me)
  • How many assessment hours did you have + how many integrated reports did you write: 250ish, around 25 integrated reports
  • What practicum experiences did you have? (settings/populations): Mostly child/adolescent in hospital settings, outpatient child-based assessment, integrated care, one rotation with college students
  • # of publications (and clarify whether first author or not): 1, my advisor bounced my first year, and I struggled to find my home in other labs
  • # of posters/talks/conference presentations, etc.: around 20
  • Strategies when applying: My spouse was staying at our paid-off house (in this economy!!), so I was geographically limited to bordering states/within 5-hour drive/had a direct flight, but I still largely focused on child/adolescent sites. I made sure they took counseling PhDs, sought mentorship on my app materials from students who did well the year they applied, made sure to really show my personality in my essays, and got a lot of feedback from various sources on my materials.
  • Anything else you feel was relevant to your candidacy: Vibes are HUGE so pay attention to how faculty and interns seem to be like. I also think we get stuck on prestige, but the W/L and support from faculty/my cohort I had on internship was so essential for my wellbeing. Sometimes it feels like internship is the end all be all, but I was unbelievably successful when applying to what I thought were reach sites when I got to postdoc despite my internship (AMC) not being prestigious.
3.) How many sites you applied to/What types of sites you applied to: 13 sites but 4 of them I applied to 2 tracks each, a mix of AMCs/hospitals/CMHC/one VA, specialty areas: Child-focused/trauma/integrated care

4.) How many interviews you were invited to: 14 (multiple tracks included)

5.) Did you match? (if so, Phase I or Phase II, at what type of site, and if you're feeling generous, how you ranked that site)
Matched in Phase I! Not my #1 but in my top 5 and it absolutely set me up for success. I received an invite to all 8 post-docs (including Ivys) I applied to afterward.

1.) The year you applied/matched: 21/22

2.) Your stats:
  • How many face-to-face intervention hours did you have (and if you recall, further break down into individual therapy, group, supervision of other students, etc.): 508
  • How many assessment hours did you have + how many integrated reports did you write: 138 hours, 13 integrated reports
  • What practicum experiences did you have? (settings/populations): Department psychological clinic, inpatient psychiatric unit, and academic medical center. Worked with both adults and children
  • # of publications (and clarify whether first author or not): 4 peer-reviewed (1 first author) and 4 under review (2 first author)
  • # of posters/talks/conference presentations, etc.: 20
  • Strategies when applying: Only applied to sites that had at least 6 hours of research time available, not geographically limited but focused on the Northeast and the East Coast
  • Anything else you feel was relevant to your candidacy: Research fit was a big importance to me, and I also wanted to go somewhere that had an available post-doc if I wanted to stay. I also paid a lot of attention to the interns during interviews to get a good since of whether they were happy or if they were unhappy and exhausted. All of my interviews were virtual, so I also tried to attend in-person open houses or do tours for my top sites. Attended ABCT meet and greet to introduce myself to training directors.
3.) How many sites you applied to/What types of sites you applied to: 16 sites (10 AMC, 3 VAs, 3 consortium), mostly adult sites but a few with child rotations

4.) How many interviews you were invited to: 7

5.) Did you match? (if so, Phase I or Phase II, at what type of site, and if you're feeling generous, how you ranked that site)
Matched in Phase 1 to my #1 site (AMC)
