Hi. This is my third time applying. I have 300 credits so far but I have a strong upward trend. My past 100 units have a 3.6 ~ average. However, my most recent 30-40 units have been a 4.0. I've been mostly taking these units as a post-bacc in a formal program. Yes, I understand there's diminishing returns for each additional unit, but i'm hoping that a strong upward trend will be noticed. At this point, I'm just wondering how I can differentiate myself from the crowd. I have a strong persistent interest in research but I have no publications. I also don't have a really strong leadership experience to talk about besides my data team leader experience. Currently, I'm residing in the bay area, so I'm looking at volunteering at UCSF - I have no clue how difficult it would be to get a position. Otherwise, I will be moving back to SoCal soon.

-Student team leader for about a year in another genetics lab before that.

I received an interview for Touro last year but was rejected immediately due to my low GPA. Before that, I received an interview for NYU but was put on the waiting list because I applied late (October-November).

East Carolina doesn't accept any out of state applicants, so if you're in the Bay area, don't apply.

GPAs: by the end of summer my masters science gpa will be pulled up to a 3.4 right now its 3.3. Undergrad gpa: 2.9 overall and 2.9 science.
1370 hrs of ECs, 238 hrs of shadowing with different dentists. Confident that my LORs will stand out. I am working on my personal statement and hopefully my dental school coach will walk me through it.

Yeah trimmed it down to 18. Still a lot but I'm non traditional international student so it's more reasonable.

No I was more saying like my classes aren't the typical biology chronological order nor do I go into super higher level classes.... more breadth than depth. Instead my transcripts bounce around in Engineering, then gen Bio, then Upper level maths, then back to bio. Only a concern to me since I don't go into like 500 level bios (or whatever the universal translation is) and because I once brought up my major to an admissions dean and he basically shrugged and said he has no idea if adcoms will accept it or not and "i guess we'll see" lololl classic

I'm not saying or claiming that there's a perfect, normal mix or way to go about this, just saying my personal schooling ended up being so weird and individual that it feels like I am "abnormal" enough that it's hard to predict what will be acceptable or not, you know?

I'm in a very tough boat.... and I think I have to retake my DAT. But my retake would have to be at the beginning of October and I think that would be much too late. I have already submitted my AADSAS and had it processed for University of Buffalo so I want to see what my hopes for this cycle are. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Shadowing: 150 hours on AADSAS right now, continuing over the summer. GD, ortho, pediatrics
Volunteering: >500 hours. I've been doing consistent volunteering since high school and through college with many different organizations
Research: No publications, working on a research project currently.
ECs: President of Pre-Dent, Secretary of TriBeta, in Phi Sigma Iota language honor society, on the city's fluoridation committee, planned the city's Children's Dental Health Fair, Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity member, member of Alpha Chi Omega, play flute in several ensembles at school, a member of the Honor Committee...etc.
Manual dexterity skills: flute playing, fly fishing, painting (recreationally)

So currently, I've only applied to University of Buffalo. I thought my application would take longer to process so I wanted to submit to one school and then wait for others until I got my scores. Long story short, I didn't have nearly as much study time as I wanted to and it's my own fault, but I couldn't push back my test any further. I did well on PAT practice exams so I did not expect my score to be that low... on the test today I felt like I just saw so many crazy things I'd never seen before and clearly I let it get to my head.

Please help. Any/all recommendations would be great. I don't know if schools will hold my app if I say I'm retaking, or if I could even get in this cycle after that. Also... is it even possible to get an interview / get in with a 16 PAT?

Sorry this is long... final side note... I don't think my personal statement is 1 in a million but I think it's strong, and I think my UB supplemental responses were good as well. My LORs are highly recommended from a committee, and a good letter from a science faculty.

Hey, I will try to answer what I can! I feel it is important to mention that I was OOS for UB, so some things may be different. With that said, I think your GPA, shadowing, volunteering, research, EC's, and manual dexterity skills all seem to be great. I would recommend that you continue shadowing (which is already your plan). As far as your DAT is concerned, you don't have any scores that would disqualify you. You meet the threshold for UB. However, I do think it is clearly the weakest component of your otherwise great application. Since you have already applied to UB, there isn't much you can do but wait. I think that you could be invited for an interview and possibly have a favorable outcome this cycle. If that doesn't happen, at least you know exactly where you can make improvements and be ready to reapply early next June. In my experience, Buffalo is a very communicative school. If you have questions you feel only they can answer, then call them and ask them! They are great people.

If you do retake the DAT, I highly suggest practicing PAT with Bootcamp as frequently as you can (daily if possible). Bootcamp and Chad's Videos were amazing resources when I was studying. If you are not totally committed to Buffalo and wanting to start school ASAP, I suggest applying broadly. It is still early in the cycle. I also think retaking the DAT in October would be a wise choice. You could update schools with the new scores and be invited for interviews before December 1st, and if you end up having to reapply, you already have the DAT taken care of. Make sure you provide yourself with enough study time and you feel confident taking it, though. If October feels rushed again, and you do poorly, then you are no better off.

In summary,
I think you have a shot at getting in this cycle, especially if you add more schools. If not, and you do well on a DAT retake, then your chances will increase even more.

I had a 15 on my PAT and I'm a third year at NYU. I applied there in December. Same thing happened to me on the exam but hey, someone took a chance on me. It would be a very different story if you had higher TS/AA so that schools are more willing to overlook PAT/QR. Most schools really do not want to see anything below 18. I would personally retake and try to bring all of your scores up so even if PAT doesn't improve enough, you have other scores to compensate.

Excuse my grammar and spelling errors as well, it was also late for me and I was in quite a frazzled state so I didn't notice them until now. I am scheduling to retake the DAT on October 2nd and hoping for the best on the timeline of things. UB is most definitely my top choice, but I will be applying to other schools as well. Finance is a bit of a concern so I have to be smart on where, but I'll be adding at least a few more to the list.
The first time around all I used to study was a Kaplan book I bought for $50 and free websites. Not a good plan! I was naïve and realized too late that $350 for bootcamp is just a drop in the bucket and that it could've really been beneficial. I purchased it this morning, so hopefully with consistent studying I will do much better the next time around. Fingers crossed UB gives me an interview and a shot at acceptance.

NYU is one of the schools that really cares about RC. I don't get NOVA- a lot of my FL classmates with solid stats/publications/EC were rejected by them. Touro is young enough that they're probably more willing to take risks on candidates. Depending on where you are from, Midwestern, Marquette, LECOM, UNLV, ASDOH may take a chance. Why is USC on there?

Everything but RC went up. That's mostly good. The reason why schools care about the RC is because you are going to see some weird questions on future school exams like the true/false/not related, something incredibly vague where you have to just intuit what exactly they mean by the context of other structures mentioned within a question, the ethics questions, and questions that generally intend to trick you if you don't read carefully.

It is also not just stats. Some schools try to deliberately compose their student body to have a certain amount of diversity of thought and personality so it's not essentially 20 of the same person with superficial differences. At a school as large as NYU, I often find students who remind me strongly of other people. Sometimes they are actual twins. Other times they are separate people with an uncanny resemblance that throws many of us off because we never see them both in the same place at the same time. Don't fret too hard- your job is to make them like you via PS and at the interview.

This is my second time applying to dental school and retaking my DAT. I ruled out nearly all the schools that require at least a certain DAT score for a certain section. The RC is killing me long story short I came in a minute late for the RC part and it messed me up real bad. I improved drastically on my sciences and I really don't want to retake my DAT.

my GPA: 3.65 / sGPA : 3.54 plenty of shadowing/work experience and great LOR

We have the same RC score and I've gotten 2 interviews so far! Don't lose hope!

Everything but RC went up. That's mostly good. The reason why schools care about the RC is because you are going to see some weird questions on future school exams like the true/false/not related, something incredibly vague where you have to just intuit what exactly they mean by the context of other structures mentioned within a question, the ethics questions, and questions that generally intend to trick you if you don't read carefully.

It is also not just stats. Some schools try to deliberately compose their student body to have a certain amount of diversity of thought and personality so it's not essentially 20 of the same person with superficial differences. At a school as large as NYU, I often find students who remind me strongly of other people. Sometimes they are actual twins. Other times they are separate people with an uncanny resemblance that throws many of us off because we never see them both in the same place at the same time. Don't fret too hard- your job is to make them like you via PS and at the interview.

That's great because I am considered a "disadvantaged student" and I believe my PS is solid so hopefully they see that I improved on everything else and that I have good LOR

Hello everyone,

I just took my DAT and I didn't score as high as I would have liked. BREAKDOWN:
19 bio,
18 gen chem,
23 orgo,
18 reading,
18 math
20 pat

overall science 19
overall academic 19

my question is do you think I have a good chance of getting into NYU?

I have an overall gpa of 3.57
science gpa is 3.3
I am a biochem major
I have a good amount of extracurriculars including volunteering, research, working at a dental office, shadowing and more.

I have only received 1 interview so far, and I have been decline admission from ECU (residency issue - even though I would be able to get residency before matriculation) and Loma Linda ("not competitive").

* I'm taking a 5th year and will apply then (in summer of 2018), so I will increase the shadowing hours

Virginia resident, so will definitely go for VCU, but not sure what schools will value DAT more than GPA. Thanks.
