Hi all,

I was just wondering what's the "typical pre-med" class schedule for freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior year. I've tried searching, but all I could find were specific "help with class schedule" posts. I'm sure it would be really helpful for me and all the other incoming freshmen to get a example class schedule to compare with when choosing classes.

Thanks!!!

-Jeff

Hmm my freshman year was a mess of classes that had nothing to do with pre-med intentions. My sophomore schedule is probably more accurate for what a freshmans should be. All in all, pretty generic: Bio w/ lab, Chem w/ lab, Calculus-Sequences and Series, and Family studies. I'm on terms though there could be some differences there.

General note - Most important thing freshman year is getting both biology and gen chem done I think. Start shmoozing around graduate students or professors for the possibility of research opportunities if that's your interest too. Probably good to finish up Calc I and II also.

Freshman

Math 241 (biocalc), Ital 101 (Elementary Italian), Chem 101/L (Intro Chem+lab), Engl 052 (English and Computers), Spcl 390 Research Seminar, Lifetime Fitness

I think what you'll notice is that there is no "typical" pre-med schedule. Some people take the sciences earlier and some wait until their last years (and some people wait until after they graduate undergrad). You just need to major in something you enjoy and take the required pre-reqs, when that is is up to you (and your major).

For my freshman year I took:

Bio/Chem/Pre-Calc/Eng101/Orientation to the Chem Sciences/Chem Lab for 15 credits
Bio/Chem/Calc I/Eng102/Sociology/Chem Lab for 18 credits

I'll add my upcoming schedule (fall sophmore year)
Organic II
Calc II
Physics I (calc based)
Organic lab
Humanities lower level class
Organic research
This adds up to 18 hours...

I did this, but the research would be orgo the class. Did well, you will too! 👍
Thanks for the encouraging words! I'm a little intimidated but I'll learn a ton.
To the O.P.- I took organic chem I in my second semester of my freshman year; that is, right after Gen Chem I. I know the majority of students take organic I and II in their sophmore year, but after doing this I really think organic I follows gen chem I very nicely. In fact, I recieved a B in gen chem, and an A- in organic. Here is what my first semester at college looked like-
Gen chem, Precalc, English (req), and a nuclear and chemical weapons class (really cool!!)

My schedule for senior year...

I think human physiology I will be manageable in the fall MichiganEMTInt

Wow, thanks for all the replies! This will surely help me when the time comes for me to choose my classes.

Yeah, that is true. Since undergrad will probably be the last time for me to get the change to do something non-science/medicine, I'm planning on majoring in something I'm really interested in, environmental toxicology.

For those who decided to clear the chem and bio requirements early on (like 1st or 2nd year), was it harder to recall the stuff for the MCAT?

Thanks for all the responses, keep them coming!

Senior year

Fall 08

Human Anatomy and Physiology 1
Physics 1

Winter 09

It won't be if you get a good review book. My issue was physics and I had that 2nd year.

Same thing here: my freshman year (this past year) ended up having nothing to do with pre-med, unfortunately so this coming year I will be taking what most freshman pre-meds will be. General Bio/Lab, General Chem/Lab, Calculus. I'm also taking some other classes that are not pre-med related. Hope that helps

That sounds like an interesting major - and if you take a year off between med school and undergrad you should be able to find a decent job.

If you take the prereqs early on you can do a few things: take the MCAT early, take upper-level courses in physics, chem, and bio, or (something that really helped me) sign up as a tutor for those prereq courses. You'll be forced to go over the material over and over, and if you can teach it you probably will understand it on a greater level than just studying it.

And, to just prove you can major in anything and still be premed...

Freshman year: (placed out of gen chem lecture and 1st semester lab b/c of AP scores and strong lab work in HS)

Sophomore year:
Fall (19 credits): Organic I, Cell Biology, Int Ballet Tech II, Int Modern Tech I, Pointe II, Dance Composition, Music for Dancers, Stage Lighting, Stage Tech

I'm a dance major with a concentration in dance science.

Fresh
Fall: Biostatistics, Gen Chem, Physics I
Spring: Analytical Chem, O Chem I, Econ, English Composition
Summer; O Chem II, O chem lab

Fall: Physiology, Biochem III, Biology III, Humanities elective
Spring: Neurology, 2x Humanities elective, Physics II

Senior:
will take physical chem, 2x english lit, 1x english comp, 1x humanities elective, biochem lab, pchem lab

Scary to think that I'm starting junior year already...
Also, at my school, you have to take the lab when you take the lecture because the lab grade is part of your overall grade, so it's not really considered another 'class', its just four hours of your life every week that shows up as 0 credits *false enthusiasm*

Freshman Year
S1: Principle of Bio I (w/lab), Gen Chem I (w/lab), Legacy of the Modern World, Music Theory I, Sightsinging and Eartraining I, Private Voice, Private Cello, Orchestra (19 credits)
S2: Principles of Bio II (w/lab), Gen Chem II (w/lab), Psych, Music Theory II, Sightsinging and Eartraining II, Private Voice, Private Cello, Orchestra, Choir, Chamber Singers (21 credits)

Sophomore Year
S1: Genetics (w/lab), A&P (w/lab), Orgo I (w/lab), Private Cello, Private Voice, Orchestra, Choir, Chamber Singers (17 credits)
S2: Ecology and Evoution (w/lab), Orgo II (w/lab), Calc II, Private Cello, Private Voice, Orchestra, Choir, Chamber Singers (17 credits)

Junior Year
S1: Physics I (w/lab), Immunology, Biochem I (w/lab), Jazz Dance, Private Voice, Private Cello, Orchestra, Chamber Singers (18 credits)

I highly recommend not taking as many credits as I did S2 freshman year. That sucked, quite frankly. On the other hand, this semester is the first time I'm taking a class simply because it sounds like fun. I was trying to double major in Bio and Music at first, and then by my s'more year, I realized that was a really dumb idea, so I dropped down to a music performance minor.

I think the most important thing to do is take at least one class (even if it's just a 1 credit class like orchestra or something) that you know will keep your stress level down. Also, plan ahead. I took it easy my sophomore year because I just took a job as an RA and wasn't sure how much time that would take. Similarly, I'm going to be sitting on my school's Board of Trustees for the next two years, so I'm going to be starting my senior thesis early.

Good luck with freshman year. Don't forget to have fun and enjoy college; it goes by fast! :luck:

Yes sir 😎 I will see you in B108! Can't wait for a semester of G-proteins! Text me your section of genetics...I'm gonna need a study partner for that class, senioritis is kicking in and I'm sure it won't be better next spring.

It's all about setting up your schedule to be able to take the minimum amount of units senior year to be able to graduate! We'll be busting our *** the 4 years after undergrad, so why not take a nice, chill year?
