Im graduating from my undergrad in 2007 spring..with a BS in chemistry...and undergrad gpa of 2.88..ms 3.01... i obviously need 2 do somemore coursework.. im wondering..would it be an ok plan for me to teach for a year..while doing a put together post bacc program of my own as a part time student....or just try to get into a post bacc somewhere.. how do med school admins look at experience as an teacher..ive always wanted to experience teaching and i guess this is my opportunity...what do you guess think about this?im also interested in DO because i want to be in ortho..and i like their approach to med..so should i retake classes i didnt do well in..(C) or as previously stated..try to simulate a post bacc program with courses i put together..

I assume you mean teaching high school? Many in the past have had trouble with working while doing their post-bacc and having med schools complain that they won't hack it because they weren't taking a full course load. We all know it's stupid b/c working & taking classes is more difficult and there are definitely success stories of people who have done that. But most schools would probably prefer to see you taking a large class load and doing very well.

I found teaching to be very enjoyable however also VERY time consuming for a post-bacc student. I taught a few undergrad level physiology courses, and did one tour as a middle school physics teacher. Both were awesome, but both limited the amount of time I had available to devote to post-bacc coursework and my research.

Based on your GPA, I would get a good feel as to how much you can handle by first doing one thing at a time. Then slowly, and I emphasize slowly, expand to other things. You can have all the wonderous EC's in the world, and hold various other degrees, but if you are deficient in your performance in science classes, then I'd clamp down on that area first. The good news is your GPA is salvagable. Really 1 year of post-bacc, and maintaining a 3.5+ will do wonders. Ultimately you are the best to judge your ability to handle teaching + post-bacc. Good luck!
