I am hopeful to get back near my hometown for postdoc. There is a regional children’s hospital that hires psychologists for treatment of challenging behavior for children with ASD, however, I do not see that they offer any psychology postdocs. I have a few friends on internship that have been reaching out to private practices about hiring a postdoc and these offers have been well received.

I am wondering if I can reach out to the children’s hospital to see if they’d be willing to take on/create a postdoc position but I wonder if this would be an odd request since it is a hospital versus private practice. I also wonder how it may be perceived by them if I eventually applied for a job there and was remembered as the girl who asked them to magically create a postdoc, lol.

Any input is helpful. Thanks!!!

I don't think it's an issue about whether or not you will be perceived negatively. I imagine that the staff would look upon it favorably, in theory. Your real roadblock is infrastructure and budgeting. Setting up a postdoc usually takes years to get through all of the hurdles (didactic infrastructure, how will billing work, getting the approval of the admins on the business side of things, etc). It's easy for a private practice to set one up, they're just going to ride those postdocs ragged to maximize profit. Hospitals are a whole different animal.
