Hey everyone,

I had a question for you guys. Suppose you get accepted to some dental school, but it isn't really someplace that you would prefer to go. Do they let you postpone your admission for a year if you want?

Basically, that gives you a chance to re-apply for the following year to your top choices, but still having the one you got accepted to before in your back pocket, in case things don't work out.

In my case, I am a Michigan resident and I want to stay at one of the two schools at home (family reasons)... but if I don't get accepted here I would like to take another stab at it.

Do any of the schools allow this?

Some schools will allow a deferment for a year, but I highly doubt they would allow it for your situation. Typically the deferment is available in order to allow matriculants to further career goals or achieve other goals (ie, rendering services in other countries, earning a masters degree, etc).

"Wanting to apply to a better school" probably doesn't fit under this catergory.

I dont know if you are already in the application process for this upcoming year or not, but if not, here is what I am doing. I too want to stay in Florida if at all possible (my state), so I decided to ONLY apply to the two florida schools this time around and PRAY that I get in. If I do not, then I will apply to MANY schools next year. I figure this option gave me two shots at my state schools since they are where I really want to be. HOWEVER, I really wnt to be a dentist, so if I do not get in this time around, I will be HAPPY anywhere next year.

This may not be the best way to do it, but it was the best I could come up with.

I was able to defer my acceptance last year to Columbia for this year, but the stipulation was that I notified them of my decision to attend or not before December 1st.
