I can't be deployed for several years, but when the time comes I'm planning on volunteering for deployment, just to better plan the timing and perhaps the location. Being a Guardsman, what are the potential locations of deployment? I know Army Reserves can be deployed to Iraq, the Stan, Europe and North America, etc. Basically, anywhere there is a US troop presence. Lets say I could volunteer for deployment right now, what are my options outside of Iraq, Afghanistan and US disaster relief sites? Can I deploy to another state (Alaska, Hawaii)? Can I deploy to Europe? Japan? Korea? Thanks...

My understanding is that as a Guard member, you're probably going to be manning a level one or two in Iraq or Afghanistan. The reservists tend to deploy to CONUS locations to fill in for physicians heading to the middle east.

Asia and Europe are billets, not deployments. I don't believe the Guard sends folks there. An infantry officer friend of mine is getting ready to deploy to Africa for a year, I assume there is a physician going with them. Regardless, in all probability you're going wherever we're fighting at the time. That's where the largest need will be...

Uh, anywhere. It's the Army.
'Nuff said. As a medical student, you're asking where you'll be deployed in 4-9 years time. If you asked folks currently in the Guard 4-9 years ago, you'd get different answers than you have right now.

If you're not prepared to deploy anywhere in the world the Army sees fit, wait until you're done with residency and join for the great loan repayment programs ($120K for the Guard, $250K for the Reserves, as of now).
