I am seriously considering attending the ASHP Midyear conference in Anaheim, CA, this year, as I am very much interested in moving to southern CA (specifically, Los Angeles) upon graduation. While I am not planning on completing a residency, do you think the expenses involved in attending Midyear are justified in terms of networking opportunities and PPS? Also, as some of the seminars are not as applicable to my future career plans, I would love to make a day trip to Los Angeles while I am there. Do you think the benefits justify the expenses of the trip, or would my money be better spent taking a week-long personal trip to Los Angeles, specifically? Thanks!!

hmm...why LA? hell, where in LA are you looking to settle? There's a GIANT difference between west side, the valley, east LA, etc... can't tell if you're a local or not.

Getting to LA from Anaheim as a tourist is tough. You'll need to rent a car, mass transit is essentially non-existent in southern california....even if you can get to the train/metrolink station, not much in/around union station LA.

save your money and take a week in/around LA (including scooting down to OC, ventura county, san diego, etc...). If you're gonna day trip it...hit the beaches in OC or stay in-county some other way.

I don't know how worth it it would be. That being said, I am going and participating, hard core, but my residency is paying to send me, and I'll be recruiting for them half of the time.

PPS is only worthwhile if you are looking for an industry fellowship or an academic position, or certain clinical specialist positions. As a student not looking for either of the above, save your money. Plenty of networking opportunities outside the PPS suite, and better than inside.

I would assume you want to do hospital, because if you want to do retail, even ASHP registration is not going to be worth it...

Don't waste your money. Only come to ASHP if you plan on doing a residency.
