Hey guys:

I was just wondering how competitive I am right now for PR MED SCHOOLS specially, Recinto de Ciencias Medicas. My MCAT score for this april was 22N (5V,8P,9B) and my GPA/science GPA is 3.8/3.5. Should I retake in August? I heard that you have to obtain at least a 23 in order to be competitive. What are my chances? How important is research for the Admission Comittee? Do you know anyone who has more or less my scores and got into UPR Medical Sciences Campus? I would like to hear any pointers, ideas, stories that you might have regarding Pr Med schools, it would be much appreciated. Thanks

Unless you are a resident of PR with strong ties (family is from there, atteneded college/high school there, etc..) it is practically impossible to get accepted. UPR only caters to puerto rican residents. Sorry, I don't mean to burst your bubble.....

On the bright side, I think your application is competitive enough to apply to both Ponce and UCC. Both schools are equally good and have students that match into great programs in the states every year.

Your GPA is solid, so I would go ahead and apply far and wide (US & PR schools), take the August MCAT, and roll the dice. Applying is literally a crapshoot and you never know where you can get accepted....

Best of luck.

Hmm...i was also wondering if i might be competitive for Ponce in PR.....I have a 3.1/3.0, and a 28 MCAT...but retaking in august, so hopefully mid 30's 😀...i know the GPA is a little low but hopefully a good MCAT and lots of clinical experience can maybe off set that a little

I am a resident of Puerto Rico and I basically have strong ties to PR (I was born here, went to high school here, etc. 😎 ) I also have done Research during 1 and a half year so I think that might help my MCAT score. Do you know what are the average MCAT scores for people who apply in PR.?
Thanks for reply.

I just graduated from Ponce. Ponce asks for a 20 in the MCAT minimum. UPR I think its a 22 or 23. You could call them and ask. I know Ponce has the score on there web-page. Your GPA is pretty good, where did you attend Univ? UPR Rio Piedras campus?

I think you should call UPR and ask for there minimum MCAT score.

I will begin med school at Ponce School of Medicine this July. You have a good MCAT score, so I'm sure that the score alone will balance out the low GPA. If you have a solid resume of clinical experience (including at least one research experience), I think you have a really good shot at getting an interview. Unless you plan on applying to US schools, I wouldn't retake the August MCAT. Apply early (as soon as the AMCAS opens up) because the application for PSM is just the AMCAS. Applying early makes a big difference!
good luck

At most PR schools, you need 12 credits of Spanish and also you must be able to demonstrate you are fluent in Spanish. Either the classes themselves will be taught in English/Spanish, or when you interact with patients, the most common language you will come in contact with is Spanish.
