I am an American and I am dreading the idea of practicing medicine here in the states. I have lived in Europe and love socialised medicine. It's not perfect but it's a darn site better than the mess we call 'medicine.' I don't mean to sound bitter, but I have seen so many awful health insurance nightmares, for both patients and docs that I just don't see how it makes sense to practice like this.

And besides, I like Canada. My grandmother was from New Brunswick. I would like to do family practice in a fairly rural area.

Possible? Thanks guys for any feedback!

Hey

It's nice to hear that you, an American, like Canada. I hope you'll be able to practise in Canada and have a nice life. I"m sick and tired of hearing people, most whom of are American, and some are not even American, bash Canada in favour of the US. These are just a bunch of ignorant people . Every country has its good and bad points, and NO country is perfect by any means. Everyone has a country of preference and that's perfectly fine, but to bash a country (like Canada) to others based on one's personal experience, is just pure ignorance and immaturity. Good luck with your future endeavours.

I love Canada!!! America is too big for its britches alot of the time and I often feel sort of embrarrassed about our behaviour overseas. I have lived in other countries and so I appreciate that we are just one country among the whole world. Nothing special, or with its pluses and minuses like everyone else as you say. :)

Hey Paws,
It's great to hear that you are interested in practicing medicine in Canada. You should not have a problem comming to canada if you want to practice "rural family medicine" and have a U.S. residency in FP. The problem about comming to canada only arises if you want to practice in an urban area, or if your training is from a country other than the U.S, Britain, Australia, etc. In these instances IMG's need to secure a residency, which is not an easy feet here in Canada.
Hope you get here one day!
