Practice in China?

Hi, everyone! One of my possible career plan is to go to China to practice dentistry which is my home country. They need better dentists, but I'm not sure if that would work in my favor or otherwise if I talk about it in my personal statement. What you guys think? is it important to them to improving the world's dentist's level?

When my aunt was applying to medical schools (this was in the mid 80s), she got rejected the first time solely because she said she wanted to go back to India and practice medicine there. They didn't like the idea of spending the time to train her when she was just planning on leaving the country instead of using her medical degree to improve the situation here in the US. But again, that was a long time ago, so perhaps the mentality has changed.

Sounds like a choice of lying by omission or commission. Five years is a long time and you may eventually decide to set up practice on the space station.

Why don't you just go to china and get a bachelor of dentistry? Only takes 5 years of college total instead of the 8 years you do here

True that. If you are going to dental school in the US, how will you pay back your student loans with a Chinese salary?

You're better off saving time and money by getting a BDS in China, as NyCzPeter suggested. The top dental schools in China are in Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, though I assume Taiwan has good schools as well.

I shadowed at the Peking University School of Stomatology, and they have a brand new teaching hospital that rivals UoP and any other school in the US, and they use the latest technology and the best materials. Also, the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Dentistry teaches in all English, if that is your preference.

It seem that lately all the school really want ppl to stay at their state, like for buffalo they said at the interview, out-of-state will get a chance but their main focus will be ppl living in NY. If the school already don't want to take that many out-of-state student, think about your chance if you gonna tell them that you not only going to leave that state once you finish but you will also leave the country, how good does that really sound?

That is a state school.

Give private schools a shot. They charge an arm and a leg, but love diversity.

True that. If you are going to dental school in the US, how will you pay back your student loans with a Chinese salary?

Maybe he is from a rich hong kong family and will pay cash for his/her dental school.

There is no way to know this is true, Your Aunt thinks thats what happened or they had a bad application.

It's pretty easy to just call the schools and ask.

My aunt had a fantastic application. She had a masters in physiology and had been working at the CDC, and she always had top grades and scores. She called the school, and they told her that's why she was rejected. Her next try she got in, and the only thing she changed was what she said in the interview. The school is top 20 both in research and primary care.

people, don't underestimate chinese salary, not to mention that the value of RMB is rising will contine to rise. Dentists in China certainly don't get paid as well as the dentists here, but you can still earn a very decent amount if you run your own private practice.

I think there's nothing wrong with being honest about your personal goals. But I wouln't focus on it too much (as if that's your primary) in your personal statement/ interviews.

That's probably more realistic, if you're going to dental school in the US as opposed to a Chinese dental school.

I agree with enfuego... why would a school want you to come there if you were gonna leave? most schools are strict on instate acceptances for that reason, and you are talking about leaving the country? I Wouldn't mention it--unless mayb eyou say you would like to spend "a small portion" of your life making a difference in other contries. But that is basically telling a lie f you plan to move there...just leave it out, IMO

I was just in Shanghai this past feb. for Chinese New Year. I was reading this information booklet about this new private practice that opened. They have about 10 dentists on staff and 9 out of 10 of them got their DDS/DMD from the States.
