lmao. I would happily trade the knowledge Booboo seeks for a well thoughout post by said Booboo about the pros and cons of a heavily regulated free market economy in the context of modern Western democracy, i.e.- in a progressive tax system where the majority pays nothing, how can government incentivize its citizens to innovate yet bend to the will of majority rule...perferably summarized in 5,000 words or less.

You know, you all can really be jerks! Yes, it is an ambiguous question but there might be people out there without your "great" knowledge that are just seeking some answers and do not know how to formulate the 'right' questions.

To try to boil it down and be of some help....
Do you like to teach....then go into Academics.
I do not like to teach, so my options were to work for a group practice or work for a hospital. Pros of working for a hospital....I don't have to buy into a practice or be a group's slave for whatever time they deem. I don't have to deal with the politics of the group or anything like that. I am pretty independent and like to do things my way. On the other hand, I will never have the income potential that I would have if I worked in a group. That is my experience, for what it is worth. Also, I got my job by blindly sending out my CV. The hospital I am with did not advertise this position, so don't narrow your ideas of how or where you can get ajob based on what is advertised. Hope that is a little help.

Are academic pathologist required to do research/bench work or it all depends? In other words are Research and academic pathologists different?

 

[yaah]

No. Academic pathologists sometimes do not do a significant amount of research. Many do research that is more clinical research (assimilating clinical data, staining a bunch of cases with immunostains, collecting series of cases and determining survival data, etc). Many also do actual lab research on tissues, but oftentimes pathologists that do significant lab research do not have a significant clinical component to their work.

I thinks politics are even WORSE in academia - everyone is kissing the chairman's butt, vying for off-service time, trying to get your paper published in certain journals, etc...academic medicine is kind of cut-throat sometimes.
