Hello Everybody

In no way, shape, or form do I mean to sound neurotic in this post. I am simply looking for some guidance and advice, as I am the first person in my family to ever go to medical school.

Back in first week of September, my school made all of us M2's take a practice Step 1 exam. I scored a 120 CBSSA score for an approximate step 1 score of 148. Although I know many kids in my class scored below that, I'm not sure where I stand being ~9 months out from my anticipated exam date. Especially since my school's curriculum (US MD) is a bit non-traditional (I have yet to take gastro, pulm, endo, mens/womens health, psych, neuro, renal, and ENT). Moreover, my school hasn't really talked to us about our scores yet, so I just kind of feel hung out to dry as of right now.

I use Zanki BTW. And as a reference, I love Peds but I would like to have options. Thank you for any guidance/advice.

what is the problem? You have basically not covered a large chunk of curriculum. I assume you are going to one of those schools where they administer CBSSA's every term even though you havent gotten all the info. If your are within an sd above or below the median of your class you should be fine.

9 months before step 1 I don’t think I’d have been able to write my name at the top. You’re WAY too far ahead to be worried, you’ll improve by huge amounts as you learn each organ system.

Zanki is good if it works for you, also try getting an easier qbank like USMLERx to use how and UWorld about 3-4 months before the test. Practice questions and focusing on learning material are the keys to improving from where you’re at now.

Good luck!

It’s their way of saying, “shape up kids, we are watching you.” My residency did something similar first few weeks, and posted score! Yes public humiliation can be a motivation tool too.

You'll be fine. I scored the equivalent of like 185 8 weeks out from my test date and ended up scoring in the 230's (which was exactly what I wanted, I'm sure others who worked harder made even greater gains).

Don't let it freak you out - just keep your head down and do the work and you'll be good.

Maybe you should tell the school to give you guys nbme custom assessments covering material you’ve actually done so far.

I see no point in testing material from blocks you haven’t even covered yet

Dont worry too much about it. I remember starting usmlerx around this time and did uworld during dedicated. My practice test right before dedicated was pretty bad and I still did decently on step 1.

The rationale is that you'll eventually see how far your CBSSA score climbs after taking gastro, pulm, endo, mens/womens health, psych, neuro, renal, and ENT, which is supposed to be both encouraging and motivating. Does it really work that way? Not sure, but that's the argument.

My school does this as well...I can't imagine your score at this stage has any correlation whatsoever with your real score outside of extraordinary outliers. They're just trying to put the fear of God into you. I know a good amount of people who didn't pass our practice test pre-dedicated and went on to get solid scores (230+).
