Taking the DAT within the next month and i wanted to start taking practice tests really soon...how much in advance did you guys take practice tests and which ones are the best to take/most indicative of the real thing?

also, is achiever worth it or is it just a useless overkill?

I never used achiever.
I used Topscore, ADA 2009, 2007 for my full length practice exams.
You want to take these practice exams because you need to know what it's like to sit through the full exam. Topscore was great. I liked Topscore better than ADA actually, but because these exams are from the people who created the DAT, they are good practice.
I took one a week for 3weeks. And then I did 2 during the last week of my exam.
