practicing medicine in the US with British degree

Hi,

Is it possible to be a doctor in the United States if I studied medicine in the UK?

Thanks for you help.

Yes. You will have to take the USMLE and do a residency (in order to get an unrestricted license and likely in order to be eligible for board certification)

As a foreign graduate, you will need to be certified by the ECFMG

Thanks for your help.

I actually haven't started med school yet, but I'm planning on doing it in the uk since it's difficult for an international student to go to med school in the states.

Do you know if I can choose which country I want to do my residency in? In words, can I choose to do it in the states even though I will have earned my degree in the uk?

thanks so much.

The first choice is always to go to med school in the country where you want to practice. 8 years combined of college and med school in the US may be prohibitively expensive for you compared to its equivalent in the UK (where I know schools are MUCH cheaper). Gaining a residency position as a foreign medical graduate is a dice roll, I think something like half of applicants are unsuccessful. Pursue it only if you have a solid backup plan you'd be happy with in the event you're blanked.

Unless you're looking at this as a means to emigrate to the US, in which case, you've nothing to lose.
