Hi dear colleagues. could you plz tell me how much does it take your time to do pre and post operative consultations?(esp residents in training hospitals) should you do any physical examination? or you just see the patient and the history & Ph/E taken by other doctors and then decide?! is any further physical exam or Hx taking necessary? I know that some hospitals have pre-op anesthesia clinics and there are anesthesiologists who take the patients' history and do physical examinations(mouth and airway,BP,lung, heart and pulse oximetry). do you do all of that routinely? TNX.

I'm sitting in our pre-op clinic right now, so I'll go ahead and post. Most patients undergoing surgery at this hospital are required to be seen by an anesthesia provider prior to DOS. We review their prior records, take a history, and perform an airway and cardiac/pulmonary physical exam, as well as any other exam that is necessary, based on history and the planned procedure. All of this is then documented in our electronic record system, so that whoever does their case does not have to go digging through their outpatient record for cath results the night before or day of surgery. Of course, there are several providers at our hospital who do not do a decent job at this, and we sometimes end up having to dig through the electronic chart for this information, anyway.
