Pre Dental Courses

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Alot of schools want to see biochem now as a prereq so I would take at least enough to fulfill that requirement.

Anat/Physio may not be neccessary but according to one school studies have shown that students who took Anat/Physio as undergrads score better in these subjects on the dental boards. So if you need the credits for your degree you may want to sign up.

genetics is also recommended, as well as courses in business management and design or studio art courses such as jewelry or ceramics

Here are some relevant courses I have taken in undergrad on top of bio/chem/orgo/physics: microbio, vert. zoo., parasit, genetics, human anat/physio, biochem, ceramics, business management, ethics.

Many schools want an English credit... a few I came across wanted a psych credit (I think those were Californian schools - forgive me if I'm wrong).

You should check out some of the websites for the schools you think you might want to apply to - besides the mandatory courses each school requires, some will provide you with a list of elective courses that will help to round you out as an applicant (and make your application more attractive).

For real. Look at some school websites.

Please check out this link below and a segment below. Do you guys agree that the pre-dental prerequisites from DBU are very common: a sound liberal arts program? Does this apply to most Dental Schools? Just want some input..

DBU quotes,

"The pre-dental and pre-medical programs are designed to prepare students for entrance to medical and dental schools. Qualified Dallas Baptist University students have been very successful in gaining admission to these schools. Students planning a career in medicine or dentistry should earn the bachelor's degree before beginning professional study. The student may major in any discipline, taking as electives the courses needed to meet entrance requirements of schools of dentistry and medicine. A sound liberal arts education is a common prerequisite for admission to professional schools."

😕

I don't see anything wrong with what is posted. It looks pretty solid, besides being a baptist school. j/k😀

My only problems with the prereqs listed in that link are as follows

1) only one semester of general biology is stated as required. Most schools require two semesters of general biology (or three quarters). Physiology and anatomy do not always count as general biology for all schools (but it works for some). Think about taking a zoology course. At my school, they have a semester of general bio devoted to cell and molecular bio, and another devoted to organismal.

2) No english or Writing requirement is listed. Although most school have this as a basic requirement of overall graduation, as a predent, you should take at least 1 writing course and 1 literature course since some schools do recommend if not require it.

3) This isn't a big deal, but like someone else mentioned...Psychology 101 is a course required at the University of California Schools in case you want to go to one of those.

If you have an undergraduate degree they don't require the phyc 101...(@ USC). The other california schools may be different.

Hey guys I started dental school a couple weeks ago and I've already noticed my undergrad education is going to help me out. I have a good background on all the stuff we have been covering thus far and I think it'll help me out a lot. Even though a lot of these classes suck and you'd rather not take them in undergrad, I think they'd help out a ton once you get to dental school. I took biochem, anatomy, physiology, genetics, immunology, cell bio, and micro on top of all the basic prereqs. in undergrad and trust me, it's helped already. I highly recommed these if you can take them.
