For the next two months I have no classes whatsoever and would love to utilize this time to improve my standing for dental school acceptance.

I already have a Bachelors in Marketing and now need to take some basic sciences in the Spring for the DAT

Til then I was thinking of doing a number of things. One being enrolling into a 9 week dental assisting program to become a DA. Is that a good idea? I was thinking it would help me understand some things even before I start DS, if anything.

Another would be shadowing, volunteering, and researching as much as I can during that time. Which would be best at this time? Even if I wanted to research, how do I go about starting something like that. Thanks for your help.

You should sit down and look at where the weaknesses are in your application. If you have no volunteer hours that should probably be an area you should focus on, same goes for any other aspect you feel is important for dental school. If you are planning on working until you apply for dental school then I would think the DA would be a good idea, but if your just going to take the program just to say you did I wouldn't think that would be a good idea.
For research generally you do research with a professor at your school. Basically just look through what professors are researching what on your school website and then approach the professor and see if you can join.
Personally, I like volunteering with dental related associations. That way I kill two birds with one stone, volunteer and observation. Such as Sealants for Smiles (placing sealants on kids teeth), or contact your pre-dent club they should have some ideas.
