Hey Pre-dents,
Let's start storming some ideas, and giving few tips about applying for the 2013 school year.
-How are you preparing for the DAT?
-How soon you plan taking the DAT test?
-your GPA?
-Any concerns or questions?

lest's get the party start....

I'm planning on taking the DAT June-2012. I'll take a practice DAT test by the end of this month to see where I'm standing right now....
Any thoughts?

I'm applying for the 2012 cycle but to answer your questions/tips...

Preparing for DATs, as much practice as possible. There are many threads about what material to use, but I recommend Kaplan Blue Book, Cliffs AP Bio, CrackDatPat, and TopScore.

If you want to be in the first batch, I would take the DATs are the latest, late May. The earliest to start your AADSAS is June 1st, but it takes about 3 weeks for them to process it, which is just the same amount of time it takes ADA to process your score and send them to AADSAS (3 weeks give or take)

that's when i'll be applying!! I already took my DAT and it's SO NICE to have it out of the way!!! my only concern now is keeping up my grades (i transferred from a school with no +/- to a school with that horrible scale...so it will probably bring me down a few notches) and getting lors....any tips on getting to know professors? i've never gone to office hours before so i guess i should start haha

yup, you should start going to office hours and let at least two professors know you very well, Good Luck

Hey! I am planning to apply in 2012 as well. I am 28, 3 small kids, husband...My cgpa is 3.75, my sgpa is 3.5. My concerns are my volunteering, extracurricular activities. I am originally from Belarus, I came to US in 2005. I was able to transfer some of my credits from the University I was attending in Belarus, so it took me 2 years to graduate. During that period of time I was concentrated on getting good grades and finishing up my degree as soon as possible. As soon as classes were over I had to run home to take care of my children, and as a result I have no volunteering, no clubs participation and so on...I do have some shadowing though. What do guys think about it? Does the Adcom care about the reason why you may not have certain things in your application? And I truly do have a real passion for dentistry.

I think you'll be fine, you have one hell of great GPA.... just do well on the DAT and get above 50 hours shadowing

I am applying this summer an am going to try and get my DAT done early July. I already have 2 letters of recomendation lined up so things are going decent I suppose. With a GPAsci of about 3.4 and some interesting EC's I think it will be okay but it's too early to tell!
As far as preparing for the DAT - I am finishing my DAT pre-reqs next semester (Ochem 2 is the only thing left) and I just took the final bio and gen chem courses this semester so everything should be fresh in my mind by summer!. I am going to use the materials everyone talks about on this site in June and evaluate myself in the beginning of July to make sure I am ready. Taking the DAT in July hopefully wont damper my application.

for EC's
-officer positions in a fraternity
-treasurer of airsoft club
-operation smile club
-predent club
-Honors society
-voluntary one week mission trip to dominican republic to teach nutrition/health care
-Teaching assistant for Nutrition course next semester
-Teaching assistant for Bio course next fall
-75 hours shadowing
-volunteered at community health clinic

Sorry that was pretty in depth, but I really want to see how you guys compare because although people are in worse shoes than me I am still nervous.

Good luck to you all!

You know my situation is the same as yours except 3 kids and a husband 🙂. I just got in with lower GPAs. Its great to hear that you decide to go for dentistry. Its hard but its worth it.

1st: keep increasing your GPAs.
2nd: kill the DAT
3rd: In my opinion, you need 1 or 2 more volunteer activities. If you can get involved in the pre-dental club at your University, its great. You only need to attend some meetings (1 or 2 hours max). If you have 3 kids, find a volunteer position that involves kids. You can hangout with your kids and do your stuff. check out volunteermatch.org

Adcom does care about your whole application.

I think you should plan to take the DAT 3 months BEFORE June 2012. The application opens in June and the last thing you want is to have to wait 3 months to retake it if you want a higher score. If you shoot for March, then you can take it again in June if necessary.

You don't want to want to improve your score and not be able to retake it until September, by then it'll be really late. Esp since it takes them a few weeks to send your scores to the schools
