How many of you pre-dental students have jobs? Is it possible to have a job while having to take 3 pre-reqs (w/ 2 labs) and trigonometry? I mean, I would like to get A's, so wouldn't a job get in the way?

I worked at a hardware shop while taking 17 credits (GChem, Precalc Biology and a telecourse history class) I worked about 15 hours a week to pay for my expenses.
When I am not in school i work 50-60 hours.
I was offered a job as a math tutor this fall so I will take that job while being in Cell Bio, OChem, Calc1 and English.

The thing about working is to work on days that you won't be cramming everything in. Going straight from school to work is tough mentally. It is best to have at least 2 hours between school and work. Make sure you have designated study days and times and you will be fine! If you notice your grades slipping cut back on your hours or quit all together because school is much more important than a part-time job.

I am lucky enough and very greatful for not having to have a job while in school, but my dad makes it very obvious to me that he doesn't understand nor really care to understand that if I do not get into d-school, than I have NO clue what I would do as a career! I want it really bad, to become a dentist, and for me as an individual, I HAVE TO STUDY MY BUTT OFF to make A's. That is what I had to do last semester, and it worked. Any suggestions on what I could tell my father, to better explain to him that dental school is extremely competetive? (Besides telling him to "shove it")

I did all my prereqs while working b/w 25 and 40 hours a week and still got A's...you can do it

...? What was your cumGPA and sciGPA please? And what was your job?

your on the right path, you should tell him all that in great detail and he should start to see where your coming from. i work part time 20-25 hours a week and i took chem calc and personal improvement and got 2 A's and a B. Its not too bad, just make sure school is always your top priority.

check and see if you have any plasma donating centers.. they pay 60 dollars a week which is enough to pay for gas and some food. If you study a lot then get a job as a waiter for the weekends. Waiters make around 100-150 a night on weekends and generally are lenient with schedueling.

i taught a general chemistry lab and did bio/chem tutoring on the side.....did it as much for the money as to continuously review ...

As long as you use your time wisely you should be fine. I have worked between 20 and 30 hrs a week (never on weekends) every semester and have managed a 3.84 science GPA. Just work hard, plan well, and you should be all right.

When I was in college I usually carred 19+ credits, worked 30+ hrs/week and helped raise twins including one with cerebral palsy. I still got A's. Granted, I never slept, but it is possible with the right moivation and dedication.

Will it look bad in my interviews that I didn't have a job? I do volunteer activities.

I think it depends on the job... For me, I worked 20 hours a week for most of my undergrad and my grades suffered a bit. During the few semesters that I didn't work, my GPA went up by at least half a point (cum GPA:3.34, GPA while not working: ~3.7).

For two of the years that I worked however, I was hired as a research assistant and the experience I gained was invaluable. Even though my GPA is a bit lower due to the time I spent working, the research I gained is a big asset to my app. If you're working a crap job that doesn't enhance your application , I would say don't do it if you don't have to. Then during summer, work your tail off!!

Working, volunteering, or *something* while going to school shows the adcoms that you can juggle many different tasks and do them successfully. Not saying that straight A's without working is going to hinder you, but being able to accomplish so much at once looks GOOD on an app.

i had a job excising corneal tissue from cadavers while i was an undergrad. i was on call for over 100 hours/week but only actually worked a small fraction of that time. good money, great experience, and excellent for manual dexterity.

jb!🙂

No, it shouldn't look bad. A lot of people have never really worked and still get into school. As long as you have a well balance application, you should be fine. For people like me, we had to work to survive and not to pad the application. There are many other things you can do that would be more beneficial with your time if it came down to working or another activity to hel your chances.

Hey thanks guys for the advice. I feel better and now I know what I need to do.

I work in my college's locker room. I work 4 hours a day, 5 days a week. Out of the 4 hour shift I work about one hour total and study the rest of the time. Just find a job you can do homework at. My coworker and I had 3 classes together and we were able to study for those classes together and we got A's in all of those classes. That semester I barely studied outside of work. All of the afternoon and night was spent with my wife and kid.

I am a full-time student and work cleaning a dentists office in the evenings. Its been nice because the dr.s let me study here as well. So those late nights before a test I take advantage of a nice place to study. I just got a 4.0 on my Chem exam last week, so thats cool.
