So I totally shot myself in the foot at a recent conference i went to by not wearing a suit (only wore khaki's shirt and a tie... and 99% of the other people were in suits) so for interview season I'm trying to pay a little more attention to dressing appropriately.

I did a search and see a lot of people saying for a guy a collared shirt and khaki's is an ok - one post even goes so far to say NO TIE... is that the thing to do at these things? should i wear slacks? Tie? yes or no? I honestly just don't want to stand out!

definitely no tie. most people go very casual and you will be just find in khakis and collared shirt

For the dinner, most people adhere to "business casual" attire. Button down collared shirt, khakis/slacks of some kind, decent shoes (not sneakers), etc. Suit will make you look like a total freak. Tie will make you look like a moderate freak.

awesome, thanks for the quick replies, no tie it is.

based on the ones I have gone on already, hardly anyone wore ties to the dinner... if they did, it was usually with khakis anyways. some of them are more casual than others, but since it was only residents anyways I don't think that it mattered too much. besides it seems like the girls are the ones with more of a range of options, and that's usually worse since some of them wear far too casual stuff anyways haha 😛

Tie or no tie don't matter worth a ****. This is what matters in order.

1. Your medical school name
2. Your board scores
3. Nothing else really matters in comparison to the above two.

You'll stand out if you wear a tie to the pre-interview dinner. Wear a dress shirt and slacks/khakis.
