pre interview letter of interest topics?

My new year's resolution is to be more proactive with my med school applications. So all the schools I havent interview at I want to sent out letters of interest. I was going to talk about weekly tutoring at a elem. school, my semester transcript with University Honors, and research I assisted on this semester. Am I going in the right direction? How long is too long? Also, I'm going to call schools to check on my interview or non interview status. Sound good? Any other tips are helpful
