So what do people wear to the social events the night before the interview? Do guys have to wear another suit? pants and a nice shirt?

I have my first one this weekend. Dont know if I need to bring two suits.

I wore a nice pair of khakis or dress pants and a button-up shirt. Don't be the guy who wears a suit to the social.

Hey there,
Your dress depends upon the event. If it is casual, you can't go wrong with a turtleneck and sports jacket over khaki pants. If you don't like the turtleneck, then wear a sports shirt and no tie. Don't wear jeans and T-shirt unless you have been invited for a hay ride or a barndance.

Remember that you are on display so no excessive drinking, hitting on the women or other questionable behavior even if your hosts engage in this revelry etc. These social events are generally designed for the residents to see if you might be a good fit for the program.

If the social event says business casual, then you may need to have another suit but if it is just going to a restaurant with the residents, then sports jacket and nicer pants will do fine.

Definitely no suit. Someplaces a tie will fit in, others not. I was a big fan of khakis and a sweater. Pretty much fits in anywhere.

Hadn't thought to dress up at all but after reading this I think I'll probably play it safe with a polo shirt and khakis.

for the ladies - I usually wore a skirt and sweater...but for the colder parts of the country, the skirt was substituted with nice slacks.

I'm planning on wearing whatever I would normally wear to the place at which the event is occurring. If going out to a bar in Manhattan on a Friday night, I'm not putting on a suit. You don't want to look silly in cut-off jeans or something, but you really don't want to look like you are at the actual interview either.

Just wondering is it a big deal if you decide to skip these get togethers?

If you are going to a bar in Manhattan then don't even think about wearing a polo shirt and khakis you will look like a dork. Honestly, I can't even imagine where, if anywhere, this is still in, prep school died 8 years ago.

not a big deal to miss from the program's perspective, but it often is your best opportunity to talk to the residents and get a feel for things in a less formal environment.

It's not a fashion contest. Looking like a dork is quite allright. In fact, it's expected. 😉

I have a question about whats formal and what's not. What about those dark blue blazers with the gold buttons. At the ACS convention almost everyone (guys, that is) were wearing them, with a pair of dress pants and an conservative shirt with no tie and top button open. It was like that was the official surgeon costume or something. Seriously, there were thousands of surgeons there all wearing that exact outfit. It's not a suit. Is that mock sailor/captain's jacket considered formal or not? Do people wear those blue blazers with the gold buttons on pre-interview evenings or would that be overdressing?

Must be a Northern thing. All my yankee friends/relatives wear that exact costume. And sometimes with those soft leather brown shoes with no socks. But then again, it looks like you're in Virginia so maybe it's not a regional thing.

Here's what I recommend:

If anyone does decide to wear the recommended outfit, please do me a favor and top it off with a pimp juice cup/goblet.

I agree with this 100%. Seriously, blazer with turtleneck? This isn't 1983, or a day at the country club with 50 year-olds.

Maybe it's like a wife-beater.

Ok, I'll wear a wife beater on your advice. If it's not appropriate then I'm blaming you. 😛

Still waiting for an answer to this. Anyone?

No blazers. No ties. Slacks, button up shirt, sweater if cold.

Jorts are always a good look. Although if you really want to impress there is only one thing to wear- Hammer pants
