Pre-Match offer???

Does anyone know how does pre-match offer work? Especially how does it affect the applicants who is going through the NRMP match process like myself? Does it mean that we really don't know how many positions are going to be available through the NRMP?

i'm not sure..but i think that pre-match is illegal for US MD/DO....but i think FMG's do it. I'm sure it does happen but i dont know the exact process, i would gues the pd would offer a contract and you would have to withdraw from the match after you accept it.

I think what you're referring to is the quota...how many of a program's positions go into the Match depends on how many pre-match contracts are signed prior to the quota change deadline on 1/31. For example, if you know a program has 10 PGY1 positions, and the quota is 8, then you know 2 prematches were offered. But you won't know this info until after the Match.

are any US grads considering pre-match offers? i had a program director ask me if i was interested, considering i'm an "indepedent candidate" and eligible. basically, i graduated last year but applying this year (not an M4). wondering if this works exactly the same as for IMG's. the only benefit i can see is signing at my top choice program. otherwise i'd take my chances with the match. any thoughts?

Colinator, Im a US grad Independent applicant too and if my top choices offer me a pre-match I think I would sign it.

I hope they offer me a pre-match, wouldnt want to wait until march!!!

yes, when you go to the NRMP webpage to do your rank list for every program in the specialty that you selected they have the number of spots available for match. So if you substract that from the total that they report they have for PGY1 then you can know how many were pre-match.

Mig--are you advertising to programs that you're interested in pre-match? i thought that might be appropriate to do for my top program once i determine which that is. also, i know fmg's tend to have a sense of which programs tend to make pre-match offers . . . is there any way to figure this out up front or strictly a word-of-mouth thing? thanks!

I havent had my first interview yet, in fact is Nov 30 in NY. I havent approach any program via email or phone call asking about prematch offers. But someone told me and I read the same here in SDN that if you are interested in knowing if a program offers prematch to go ahead an ask the secretary via email or phone call.

I dont know yet if I want to go ahead and ask the sec. if the program offers prematch.

I still have two weeks to think about it!! LOL.

I think thats a very good question and you should rank #1 the program that you most like independent of how many spots they have for the match.

1) IMG (went to a non-US med school)
2) DO (went to an american DO school)
3) US physician (already graduated from an american medschool, doen't matter if you're in residency or if you finished another residency already)

I believe all of the above can pre-match but I may be wrong...
