Pre match offers

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are they legal for AMG's? Do you participate on match day?

If you are currently a STUDENT in an allopathic US medical school, you cannot accept a pre-match offer.

If you are an Independent candidate (which includes those who have already graduated from medical school, DOs and foreign students), you can accept a pre-match offer but you must drop out of the match if you do.

oops, message repeat

I didn't know this was illegal.

I did see a couple programs discuss some form of pre-match offer informally at the interview. I found this uncomfortable and chose not to show interest.

It is unfortunate when programs do this at the interview, because I may actually be very hopeful to match at the program- but would rather make an informed decision in a relaxed situation than a rash decision at the interview moment! 👎

Anyways, it does happen at a few sporadic places for whatever reason.

I think most places follow the rules (or just pre-matched with some other applicants, lol or not)

This is ethically questionable.

I can understand allowing Independents to pre-match into Advanced positions, particularly those positions out of cycle.

But to allow Independents to pre-match for a PGY1 entry position while Allopathic students have to wait until the Match?? This doesn't sound like equal opportunity to me, IMHO.

Well, I'm guessing that Urology at Mass General doesn't offer too many pre-match spots. I'm also guessing that they don't interview a ton of FMGs and DOs. The process of resident selection is not set up to be "equal opportunity."

Most people who "pre-match" are low/middle-of-the-road candidates that fit REALLY well at a particular low/middle-of-the-road program.
