HI this is a question my friend had, not me im a third year student. I know some people are gonna getting mad at this, so im sorry now. My friend has been offered a pre match position at an anesthisia program. He likes anesthsia but he really wants opto. THe question he asked me is if he signs with this program, is there anyway he can still take part in the osteopathic match. I know its not really nice to keep anesthisia as a burner, but could this be done. The reason im posting for him is cause he doesnt have a SDN account and it takes some time to set it up or something now. Thanks allot, and im sorry if this is gonna offend someone.

Opto? If he wants to become an OPTOmetrist he should quit med school asap. You're a 3rd year student?? In what?

i am guessing you mean ophthalmology? anyways, if you sign a contract you sign a contract, breaking it is bad. depending on contract: legally no good and ethically super bad. tell your friend that life is too short to what you don't really want to do and he might likely spend the rest of his life thinking the grass is greener. he needs to do what he REALLY wants to do and pursue it.

If your "friend" does not have the time to set up an account, I question whether or not they have the time management skills to enter either of those residency programs. Optometry is a killer, but if they really want to be an optometrist, I say go for it. Tell them not to settle for less.

Do a lot of programs offer contracts pre-match? I thought that was illegal.

Litigation is a potential if you friend knowingly signs a contract with a program then breaks it. Its also a dick move.

I suggest your buddy goes through BOTH matches. If he matches osteo optho then great, he'll just be ousted from the allo match. If he isnt offered an osteo position then great, he can still go through the allo match for anesthesiology.

If you buddy is already getting prematch offers then I'm sure he can land at a spot somewhere in anesthesia.

That being said why settle for your second choice field before you've given your "dream" field a proper shot? You buddy needs to answer that question.
