How much do you guys go out "party"? We all have high goals but I was just curious as to your guys/girls routines? I study ALOT and I go out twice a week.. Wednesdays and fridays... Saturdays I do laundry and study/sleep as for sundays. Just curious on some opinions on how much is too much for a premed. Even though it depends how much studying u get done, natural ability ect...

If I only went out twice a week as an undergrad it was probably because it was finals week....enjoy college....as long as you can maintain a high standard in the classroom there is no amount that is too much....just don't go past the point where your grades consistantly take a hit...its all about balance and only you can determine what is best for you...

I graduated in 2005. I dont really go out at all anymore (maybe once a month and not hard) now that I'm in the real world but as for college... Freshman year i went out an average of 4 nights a week with the occasional 5 when there was a tuesday fraternity smoker. GPA 3.0 Sophmore year i scaled back slightly 3-4 nights per week. GPA 3.5 First semester Junior year I was on study abroad in Sydney Australia, I have never drank, or will ever again drink so hard in my life. I averaged 6 nights per week with one period of 13 days straight, everything transferred back as pass/fail, and i passed everything. Second Semester Junior Year i went out about 2 nights a week. GPA 3.9 As for senior year First Semester i went out about 2-3 nights per week. I studied from Jan to April for the MCAT and taught a section of freshman cell and molecular biology laboratory the last semester during which time i went out 1-2 nights per week,, and 2 weeks before the test i didn't drink at all. April 20th (post MCAT)- May 7th 2005 was filled epic partying but despite this i managed to eek out a 4.0 my final semester in college. For the year I average a 3.95. I had finally mastered the balance. I finished college with a 3.566 CUM and a 27M MCAT (BS 10, PS 8, VR 9). I will be attending NYCOM this fall with the class of 2010. If I had given up my social life completely i could have graduated a year early and easily went over 30 on the MCAT. However looking back on things I have no regrets and given the oppurtunity to do things over i would change nothing..

There is much more time to "go out" in medical school than undergrad.

I wish I could say the same thing OSUdoc....on an average week w/o any tests I probably go out 2-3x...but with a test on the horizon...probably once a week....after the test is a completely different story......but this is all still a far cry from what I did in undergrad....not to mention that I only really go nuts after tests (ie really really drunk and staying out til morning)....

ps...the college thing could be due to the fact that I lived in my fraternity house and had a whole town full of bars all within walking distance from my front door.....I don't think I'll ever be able to physically party as hard as I did at PSU...ahh my glory days...jk jk...

I study at sports bars.

WOW, man enjoy college. I partied so much in college that people didn't believe I was a pre-med student. Moreover, most folks where shock when they found out I matriculated to med school.

with a beer in hand?

Nah---iced tea and appetizers (until we are almost done)

I think the amount of time having fun vs. time studying is relative to each individual.
In my case, I don't "party" too much, but I watch too much TV (which is my way of having fun). I'm one of those people that can cram the night before and still ace an exam, but some of my friends need to study days in advance in order to make a B. At the same time, I know people who can party all weekend, and still have a great GPA.
Just find out what works for you, what kind of GPA you can live with, and what you need to do to get it. Don't miss out on your college years because you want a 4.0 and spend 4 years locked up in the library. I tried this, and only ended up unhappy, cranky, and burned out. Enjoy yourself, do your homework when and how you want to, have fun when you need to, sleep when you need to, and don't overwork yourself. Sure, you might not end up with a 4.0, but you will be much happier and less bitter (like many pre-meds, ugh...)

I went out 5-7 times a week, and my GPA shows it, that's why I'm taking post-bacc work to boost my GPA. I had a great time, but if it keeps me out of med-school I'll be pissed.

Yeah, I have a lot of fun when I can. But I dont have a 4.0. I have a 3.4 and dont want that to drop at all. So when I do go out more than 2 times a week I feel guilty and go bury my face in notes or a textbook 😱

This is a morale booster for sure. I have been living oblivious of anything else other than nailing every class I have taken for the last 3 years. It sure would be nice to have some sort of life in med school.

Well if your goal is to try and nail every class in med school then you will not be seeing the light of day....unless you are an unbelievablely fast learner/memorizer...

If your idea of going out is studying in sports bars I suppose you'll be okay. You can study anywhere really with a laptop and earphones. But as far as really going out - I went out a lot in undergrad but I was a Psych major taking the prereqs and was out at least 3 nights a week. In med school, I go out about once a week. I don't consider studying at friend's houses, coffee shops, etc. going out though.

I *highly* recommend getting yourself used to studying in a coffee shop/bookstore/sports bar/etc. Sure, most of us feel like we're getting more done when we lock ourselves in the library, but I feel like it really takes a toll on your mental health. This year I've done most of my studying at this really nice coffee shop downtown, and a result I've seen my stress level go way down.

I can also honestly say I have studied on the beach multiple times.... 😎 😛

And yeah, we go out lots at NSU-COM. We probably have more nightlife close by than any other osteopathic school.

I must be a geek, I lost interest in partying much when I got out of high school (high school is a blur for me 👍 ) Also, my girlfriend goes to LaSalle in Philadelphia, where house parties are huge, and after running from the cops when a party got busted, I kind of lost all interest ahahah. That being said, it wasn't until my Soph. year of college when I turned 21 that I went out maybe once or twice a week to the bar. I never really got into the going to a party gig.

You can combine "going out" and studying in one event. I was at a sports bar from 3pm-9pm studying, and then started ordering the beers and invited my friends up around 9, and stayed 'til close. I normally start ordering the beers when I have about 30 minutes left of studying.
