Hi everyone,

Just a little background information, I currently am in my 3rd semester at a community college, I'm working my way through the chemistry turnstyle that's required and currently am enrolled in A&P 1. I was wondering in your opinion what some of the must-take pre-med classes are, besides for the traditional (Chem 1+2, O-Chem, physics)? By must take, I mean, what's really going to help me for the MCAT and ultimately medical school. Being that I am in a community college right now I don't have to actually fulfill credits toward a specific major yet so I am able to kind of play around with the classes that I take. Besides for Anat. and Phys. I have yet to take a college biology course, (took AP bio in HS) so I should probably take one soon, what are your opinions?

Cell bio?

It might be worth your while to take an intro to sociology or an intro to psychology. Usually they can be used to fulfill a gen ed social science credit, and since they appear on the MCAT now it might be worth your while. From the resources I've seen it looks like the MCAT focuses a little more on psych than sociology.

Part of the pre-requisites for med school is a year of biology with labs, so whatever bio class you choose, make sure it has a lab component. Other than that, choose what you want. Most places will make you take an intro/basic bio class before you can move up to stuff like molecular bio, genetics, etc.

Biochemistry might be too tough without a strong foundation in Biology and Chemistry, so seconding Turkishking's suggestion. None of my science classes really clicked until I took molecular cell bio and saw how they integrated through the Central Dogma of DNA replication and so on.

I would absolutely take as much biochemistry as you can. Biochem is the #1 subject tested on the MCAT and will be tested thoroughly not only in the bio section, but in chem/phys. Taking upper level cell bio classes was also extremely helpful to me.
