Hello!! 🙂

I'm new to the SDN. I'm 22, filipino and in need of some advice. I have a bachelor's degree in Biology back home in the Philippines and was a first year Medical student and succesfully passed it. As you all may probably know.. things back in the phils arent too good in terms of money earning and self fulfillment due to the high poverty rate and overpopulation. so i moved here to the United States in search of something better with the dream of becoming a doctor still fresh and vibrant. I had my transcripts evaluated so they gave me an equivalent of a U.S. bacelor's degree.

Right now im in an Echocardiography program and currently have a 4.0 GPA. Have considerable amounts of clinical experience with hospital and clinical rotations. I plan to take some additional subjects because im not too happy with the grades i got from the credentialing agency and plan to work in the field of echocardiogragy for 3 years just to earn some experience and money to support any future plans. Im planning to take some upper level premed courses over and some other lower division minors to improve my GPA.

favor to all: please give me advice on what else i could do or if what i'm doing is right for my specific situation or do i need to do something else to improve it. thanks alot guys and your suggestions and advice are badly needed. I dont plan to apply for another couple of years though.

Ok, you have a 4.0 and yet you’re not happy with you’re GPA? You want to improve it? FYI, here in America a 4.0 is very very good.

I'm happy with my 4.0 but thats in the echocardiograhy program that i took which is some kind of associates. I know the 4.0 wont compensate for my mediocre gpa in the philippines. My bachelors in biology gpa which i got in the philippines in other words isnt too hot.. i'm planning to take additional courses to improve my overall gpa. i need opinions and comments if what im doing is right and what else i can do to improve my application such as additional community services like what? clinical volunteering? and what not. thanks alot.

Hey man, I wouldn't worry about the clinical exp so much becuase it seems like you have a few already. However, make sure the classes (pre-reqs for medschool) you took in pinas is acceptable for the medical schools here. You can contact some schools to make sure. You will (most likely) be at a disadvantage when you apply, having taken most of your classes in pinas and not a US university. Make sure you smoke the MCAT also. Just keep doing what you're doing at work, it's good experience but if you're not going to apply untill a couple of years from now, why don't you do a MS program or a post bac program in 4 yr university or even a state school to strength your academic record. You need to improve your GPA and take classes here in the states for sure. peace out :luck:
