Hi, I’m about to graduate this month and I was wondering what I should do next to help my chances of getting into med schools.

I’m a white male and an anthro/socio major at an ivy school, my major gpa is pretty good (3.8+) but my science gpa is around a 2.8. I have one D and one C- in science courses (chem and neuro but I retook chem for an A, didn’t retake neuro bc it’s not a pre req) but I also have a couple C+s in other pre reqs.

I have decent extra curriculars, esp research but I haven’t taken the mcat yet.

What should my next step be to make sure I can get into medical school? Should I do a postbac and re-do undergrad level science courses including some of the pre-reqs or should I attend the SMP I’ve been accepted to?

What science gpa should I aim for? Would any MD schools accept me or just DO? any advice is appreciated!!

You need reinvention. I would suggest a DIY post bacc at a local university in upper division science courses as that would likely be cheaper and more flexible than an SMP. Read Goro’s guide for more details:

Thank you for your advice! I'd be doing the SMP at the same institution that I would take DIY post-bacc classes in. Since I'm already accepted to the SMP, and its relatively cheap since its at my state school, do you think it'd be better for me to take masters-level science classes at the SMP or take post-bacc undergrad courses?

In that case, it sounds like a good option. Just be sure you can do well in your classes going forward as they will be tougher and on a stricter schedule in terms of what you are taking and when. As Goro mentioned in his guide, don’t take the MCAT while you’re in the SMP as it is hard to study for both.
