Even though it looks like since psychiatrists are in such demand, the prestige of your medical school matters a bit less.. but how much to psychiatry programs care about your activities before med school? do they even look at things like your mcat score, which undergraduate classes you took, etc? or do they look at only what went on in med school, and i guess whatever other relevant life experiences?

Not one of the programs that interviewed me cared about my undergraduate classes or MCAT scores -- I don't think they even had access to these records. Academically, they were only curious about things that might relate to psychiatry and research (e.g., topic of a senior thesis). However, they were interested in "relevant life experiences," such as volunteer work, anything that might illustrate an applicant's ability to work with people, and just generally interesting things that people might have done.

that is good to know. thanks!

Most don't, but I know Mayo asks for "Official college, graduate school and medical school transcripts" as part of the application package: http://www.mayo.edu/msgme/psychiatry-rch.html
